Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra tipped to use a faster fingerprint reader with a larger scanning area

20 August 2022
We've already seen it on the iQOO 9 Pro and the vivo X80 Pro.

Sin, 20 Aug 2022I don't like fingers print scanners at all Fingers... moreSo, iPhone is better then? Hehe. Typical Apple user.

These phones with newer ultrasonic FP scanners, especially the larger ones, might be more accurate and reliable, but they’re terrible when it comes to choice of screen protectors. I have one from Vivo (X80 Pro) and you pretty much can’t use any Tempered Glass screen protector, even those with UV adhesive, because these newer ultrasonic FP scanners don’t work with Glass screen protectors. Your only choice is either a plastic or hydrogel screen protector that offers no drop protection.

Even the ultrasonic FP from the Samsung S series requires you to use a special Tempered Glass screen protector that has a “hole” that allows the ultrasonic FP scanner to read properly. Even then, it doesn’t read properly for considerable number of times.

Sin, 20 Aug 2022I don't like fingers print scanners at all Fingers... morePIN is the most secure method. It's much more secure than biometrics. The purpose of biometric authentication on phones is for convenient.

Sin, 20 Aug 2022I don't like fingers print scanners at all Fingers... moreI'd like to see you remember just 5 full ASCII passwords with length of at least 16 characters. Because if you're not, then you're not really that secure. Also fingerprint processing is done entirely on devices.

I don't like fingers print scanners at all

Fingers print I'd is just another they get personal information about you
It uniquely identify you in a way you can't change

Most pointless gimmick upgrade adding too phone price

Password words or pattern is best
You can change your password too if it gets figure out
And have multiple passwords for different websites

Can't change your fingers print password more than 10 times

My opinion definitely going to be a unpopular one

But I knew what I was looking at, might not be as useful for someone who doesn't already know what they are looking at (internals)

I hope they'll also use faster fingerprint reader on A series. I have A52s and it works great but i've seen better.

Prefer Apple’s Face ID to any of these FP scanners. It’s 2022 and Android is still working on FP.

Shadocx, 20 Aug 2022I understand what you're saying and the Z axis seems t... moreThings is, Taptic Engine is not even rotating. It's a linear motion haptic motor. At least in iPhone XR, it's positioned to move along the X axis. However, Taptic Engine is nothing like any other "vibration" motor. It's essentially moving about a rather massive chunk of metal and it can do that at really high speeds, which gives it that distinct strong feedback feel.

                                https://youtu.be/G-xnVAoeTbE?t=380

Here you can see how it's positioned inside a phone and how it looks on the inside when they open up the Taptic Engine.

Z axis motors usually have a donut shaped object inside that moves along the Z axis (through the thickness of phone) and regular vibration motors are essentially rotating an unbalanced weight that gives out vibration.

SShock, 20 Aug 2022It doesn't matter as they changed the axis of vibratio... moreI understand what you're saying and the Z axis seems to be the better choice if you want to have a great feedback, but I always thought the X axis was more premium and precise, since most expensive phones have them.
In which axis is Apple's Taptic Engine rotating?

Shadocx, 20 Aug 2022Have you actually tried changing the pattern and intensity ... moreIt doesn't matter as they changed the axis of vibration motor. Instead of vibrating through the thickness of the phone (Z axis) it's now vibrating along the length of the phone (X axis). Which is a really bad idea. Z axis means it vibrates against your leg in a pocket and against table if laying on it. X axis is not really vibrating against anything important which is just bizarre design decision, like they are making the phone for the first time...
