Do you even know what brute force is? That would involve repeatedly retrying different password iterations on servers themselves. Go on, try it basically anywhere with half competent security and after few unsuccessful tries your IP will be blacklisted. What the guy did was trick users into handing him over their logins. It's called social engineering or phishing.

Only thing Apple was to be blamed is for not demanding 2FA or at least promoting it more actively. But I know how that goes, a lot of people don't want to deal with 2FA or they lose the generator and get locked out which is extra hassle.

I received this email as well. I'm in India so not sure what is going on?

Samsung user, 03 Sep 2022Tons of news about iOS getting hacked by using Pegassus. It... morea) We're not talking OS here
            b) "tons of news" about "this scary thing"

Either be specific or stop fearmongering. Also Pegasus attacks affect Android devices too. Pretending it's just iOS is pure willful ignorance. Not to mention iOS at least is getting security updates. There is still tons of phones running Android OS that's several years out of date. Hell, most phones hardly get security updates or they get them with months long delays. Not bashing, just reality of it. Actual reality, not this Pegasus that everyone always throw around when it's iOS bashing time without any concrete evidence to support attacks actually happened. Also, one thing is general attack on casual users and another when specific high profile person is targeted personally. No one will spend any time on me or you, but one may invest all their time and resources to attack some politician or famous actor, that changes everything and no matter how secure OS or services are, it's just higher chance something will go wrong.

Anonymous, 03 Sep 2022Fanboys have been saying Samsung is very secure…in reality ... moreThis has nothing to do with OS. Also, like I said, I don't remember any security breaches on Apple side. And neither on Google's for that matter. One thing is device security which highly depends on user and another is servers from company itself, like Google or Samsung. And in the end, if breach does happen on service side (like here in Samsung's case), what kind of data was accessed/stolen and how the thing was handled (prevention and communication with affected customers).

And i remember samsung talking about their security system in month of july itself.... about how they keep galaxy device safe & all so on....

                          https://www.gsmarena.com/thehead_of_samsungs_security_team_explains_how_the_company_keeps_galaxy_devices_safe-news-55114.php

i dont blame samsung, as there is nothing 100% secure in this world.
hackers can find a way to hack or to steal some info.

atleast samsung highlight this incidence by itself which is good practise instead of hiding the fact.

never the less, as a user just be alert al the time dont fall in spam & fraud event :)

Unfortunately where I am in China a Google account is useless so you're kind of forced into using the manufacturers account. It's a bit of a nuisance when switching android brands as you have to keep signing up to different accounts for each brand you use and they all have their own different cloud systems too

"This notice applies to US-based Samsung Account holders as the US systems were the ones that were unauthorizedly accessed."
So, 1. This affected only US people. 2. Affected only people with Samsung accounts.
I have a Samsung phone, but I do not have a Samsung account. Also, I am in Europe.
To be honest, I don't know why anybody will use Samsung, Xiaomi, OnePlus or whatever account on an Android phone with already a Google account on it? What are the benefits? For me is zero benefits.

AnonD-1033007, 03 Sep 2022Hm, didn't they bashed Apple yesterday in their AD? Oh... moreI actually don't remember any security breach happen to Apple. The iCloud photo leak was not done through hacking of Apple services, but through social engineering and luring users into handing over their credentials which were then used to access their photos in the cloud. Other than that, I don't remember anything else.

This one is not as bad as if social security and credit card info was leaked (Samsung seems to be sure it was not accessed), but user name and date of birth is also not something one would like to have leaked online...

I also wonder how leak of their source code for Knox system affects their security. That happened during the same breach afaik and that's pretty severe.
