SShock, 22 Sep 2022Google finally enforcing something to make Android better? ... moreYour have missed the point. Google is not enforcing 'updates', they are just enforcing the 'method' of the update. OEMs can still use the correct 'method' and provide paltry updates.

Anonymous, 22 Sep 2022Can't you read? I said minimum 1 year. That's you... moreI was realistic. You should know me, I'd demand 5, but we all know that's NEVER going to happen when not even Google itself offers that much. The minimum would help the cheaper phones that are left to mercy of phone makers that give them "maybe they'll get updates" treatment.

A/B partitions is a start, but they absolutely need to do something because state of Android OS as whole is terrible because everyone does it their own way and it's always in best interest of companies, not users.

Anonymous, 22 Sep 2022Explain why, please. Otherwise, it makes no sense.updating system files while android runing in the same time and user interacting with it,its not bad idea- is very dumb one, both partitions can be wiped out if some error ocurs and the device became useless brick, nokia and motorola use this type of booting and the i repair most of them after such a updates

I get the benefit but I think people in the media overestimate the issue a bit. Maybe it's just me but I don't get anxiety when my phone updates for like 5 minutes once a month and I can't use it in that time 🤷♂️

Google's method has been quite shoddy.
It's meant to be a fail-safe, but has led to several Pixel devices getting bricked when on the Beta program. Google has honoured to replace them, but doubt for all users.
When it comes to Custom Roms, A/B partitions still cause issues.
The fix is relatively easy, but it's upon Google to implement it properly through AOSP, and I wouldn't hold my breath for it. It's one area where Microsoft actually does better.

Most Chinese are still releasing new phones with Android 11. They’ll just keep staying on Android 11 or 12.
Instead of requiring this, how about requiring OEMs to provide software support for at least 4 years? Who cares about partition stuff when most OEMs don’t even bother updating their phones.

How will Samsung implement all their low level kernel hacks now?
They are the only holdouts left using the ugly old system anyway.

"As one of top Android smartphone brands in the world, Samsung is one OEM that has yet to implement Seamless Updates to its smartphones – flagships included. We’re sure that the brand has its reasons for not using A/B updates, but it comes at the inconvenience of the user who will have to schedule their updates to a time when they won’t be awake - or face several minutes of downtime during a critical moment when the device is needed"
I thought Samsung was actually one of those using it lol. Their update feels fast enough for me (and that was on an A6+ and a Tab S6 Lite). I wonder if using partitions means giving Google access to more data or if it involves security risks and that's why Samsung don't do it that way....
