My wife's previous LG flex 2 could even drop from 3m high with no damage and a nice bounce back

Dude, i sound like a broken record, but i'll possibly never be able to buy a chinese flagship. They seem to be obsessed with curved displays.
No one out there to break this law?

Anonymous, 10 Nov 2022What is PWM? Is everyone supposed to know this? Why not s... more"Pulse-width modulation (PWM), or pulse-duration modulation (PDM), is a method of reducing the average power delivered by an electrical signal, by effectively chopping it up into discrete parts." (c) Wikipedia.

Due to specifics of OLED screens' structure, they use PWM as a method to change brightness level. Usually it results in more pronounced pulsation in lower levels of brightness. The less the frequency of pulsation (measured in Hz) is, the bigger stress to user's eyes and brain it can cause. Some people are more sensitive to such effects, some - less, though it doesn't mean it won't affect them.

PWM frequency less than 480 Hz isn't okay; more than 1000 Hz is better, more than 1400 Hz should be kinda okay for most people.

It's a simple explanation; there is also a "pulsation coefficient of PWM" (measured in %) which is a separate parameter from the "frequency of PWM"; and ideally it should be less than 10% (it can grow more than 100% in lower levels of brightness in less-advanced screens).

PWM frequency should not be confused with screen's refresh rate (60/90/120 Hz and so on; it affects highest possible smoothness of animation or video's motion), but higher screen refresh rate usually has a positive effect on the above-described PWM parameters.

LCD/IPS displays, usually cheaper ones, also may use PWM, usually with bigger frequencies; but most modern ones don't.

Funny enough, a positive example of PWM application is dynamic regulation of speed of computer' cooler' fans.

Tanush, 10 Nov 2022Xioami note 12 pro's are gonna be using Dimensity 1080... moreThere is no equivalent. Dimensity 920 was poor than snapdragon 778G. So let's see. But Dimensity 920 was supremely optimised in one of the Redmi Note in China.

Anonymous, 09 Nov 2022695 and 7g1 were made for 2022 phones. Already in Realme 9 Pro. Doesn't make sense to use it in Pro Plus. It would have been downgrade from Dimensity 920.

What is PWM? Is everyone supposed to know this? Why not spell it out?

Rayrick1603, 10 Nov 2022Flat screens are cheap, ugly and boring. The comeback of fl... moreSmartphones are tools, not toys. They aren't supposed to be "not boring".
Flat screens are more reliable, comfortable to use and easier to repair. And they aren't "cheap", they are just cheaper than side-curved screens, and it's another of their advantages.

BTW, iPhones since X have flexible OLED displays, and they aren't used to make screen side-curved (because that's impractical and Apple knows that), but to bend it inwards at the bottom of the phone (where it hoses the display controller) to create symmetrical "bezels" - also not a necessary thing for a smartphone, but at least there is nothing to bother anyone in it.

Also, "technological innovation" in smartphones is non-existent for at least past decade and this is completely normal. When smartphones will be replaced by some constructively different devices, capable of all the same features and more/better, that would be an "innovation" (but still a tool, not a toy). For now, "innovation" is nothing but an advertisement buzzword, which shouldn't be taken/used seriously, and has got old even as a joke/satire. Don't confuse innovation with just ordinary development of existing technologies.
