Study determines the accuracy of the Galaxy Watch4 body composition measurements

15 November 2022
The smartwatch achieves "precision comparable to but lower than that of laboratory measures" when performing Bioelectric Impedance Analysis (BIA).

Kobena, 15 Nov 2022This article doesn't do the study justice. It says 98%... moreDon't be silly.
98% correlation gives you a good enough indication of the inherent issues with the body.

Full body DEXA scans take about 20 to 30 min in a specialised room with equipment that costs millions to construct and require a qualified technician to operate. Appointments required typically. I presume this is considered the gold standard? Only thing is, DEXA scans are not meant for such uses.

A reliable multi-frequency bioelectrical impedance analysis requires a machine that costs tens of thousands dollars, and even then the lower end versions of those may give a 10% variance in results.

A cheap $500 device able to produce results even 95% similar to that of a multi-million setup is impressive, and it makes the results accessible to everyone, everywhere.

Milko Georgiev, 16 Nov 2022All these body composition measurement "machines"... moreNo one said it didn't. Bottom line is it's 97.5% accurate, and if you actually listen to it, helps increase your activity, calorie burn & weight loss. So, why is that a bad thing?

Anonymous, 16 Nov 2022Any proof of that assertion? Or are we just supposed to tak... moreThe faked numbers Apple, Inc. is producing on that marketing channel compared to what you see above.

It's not just one instance. Apple does it on every faked comparison on that promo channel.

All these body composition measurement "machines" (fancy scales etc.) are just speculating with personal data. They take your age, gander, height, weight, activity level and they just ESTIMATE your lean body mass and from there the body fat percentage. Because your LBM can vary in a narrow range then the rest if fat.

Aacro X, 15 Nov 2022I have a Watch4 and when I try the BIA it tells me the oppo... moreDepends on your BSI scales really, I have a Xiaomi one that paired with an old Zepp app managing my Miband5 also, and it is in direct conflict with the result on my Watch 4, on the Xiaomi scale, it tells me I'm Balanced Muscular body type and always lacking in water,
I'm obviously overweight from looking at a mirror and drinks 7 cups of water a day, there's obviously something wrong in that result 😂

I have a Watch4 and when I try the BIA it tells me the opposite to what my scale shows. For example, my scale displays that I have a low body fat but the watch says 26%?

And this is why Apple is spending money on having fake hype channels like The Quantified Scientist spreading fake numbers on YouTube.

YouTube; owned by Google, used to damage its own ecosystem why they themselves cash in big-time on the revenue.

This article doesn't do the study justice. It says 98% correlation. It doesn't mean 98% accurate. Correlation means they both go up or down. The variance between the gold standard and the watches will tell you how accurate the watches are. Note what study authors say "systematic correction" that indicates you need a correction factor to get accurate results.
