20 November 2022
Do you have to have the latest top of the line chip or is an older one okay? Or even a mid-range chip?

Most chipsets like A14 and A15 (4-core GPU) have pretty much no difference in loading times. They are completely identical. So, having the latest A-series chipset isn't a must but after 3 years, you can see some lag.

On the other hand, all the other chip manufacturers (Qualcomm's SD, Samsungs Exy. and MediaTek's Deminsity and Helio) are battling who can one-up the entire competition.

They should focus on efficiency and battery life as well. That is one area where flagship processors always have weak scores

I think companies will start going the apple way, as usual, which is good this time, unusually, by keeping the latest flagship chip set for the ultimate ultra pro max bs model, whatever the name. Only problem is that Qualcomm won't be happy with that, as forcing anyone who want a new flagship to get the latest power hungry soc makes them a ton of money. So we'll see.

Midrange to older flagship SOCs are good enough and viable for me. I wouldn't complain to have this year's flagship camera equipment, no need for top performance itself and a sky high price though. A bit older flagship may provide quite optimal result of having all I ever needed anyways.

I think it matters but is not necessary to be on the most recent one. I have always had low to midrange smartphones, currently the Redmi Note 10 Pro is the best I've had yet. And its processor is fast enough for what I use it. But once you've tried a few flagships you do notice the extra snappiness and horsepower. Plus they use to be relevant for longer periods because they can handle stuff many years down the line with good performance.
Apple chips are particularly impressive at least in day to day usage. My sister has an "old" iPhone 11 and it is one of the most snappy and responsive phones I've seen. Those apple bionic chips are something else.

of course they do except the dumb prices of flagship phones, people should not be paying for this. consider an Apple M1/M2 laptop that has more materials, more expensive to ship but cheaper than iPhone. consider a gaming handheld or laptop with an AMD 6800u at $1k, easily beats Android gaming phones by miles away.

Either the SD870 or A13 Bionic (if you ignore the 5G support) is perfectly fine as it costs less and performs pretty fast enough :)

On places like this you'll only find robots promoting antitrust.
Functional patent laws matters more. Without that you get one brand locking everyone else out and then you all start whining about expensive phones without innovation.

Sanid, 20 Nov 2022No they don't matter because there is more to a phone ... moreI mainly buy Flagship because I want the *BEST* modem (not really about CPU/GPU).
The modem in flagship is more sensitive, thus have a better speed/reception in poor area.

No they don't matter because there is more to a phone than a chip.
Look at all recent flagship chips, they throttle, heat up, and draw battery a lot. No one cares about optimization.

Which is why old flagship chips and midrange like sd870 still great because they have been optimized.

I doubt this will change.they have to release new chips to make money and phone companies to use them to release overpriced phones to make money while claiming their products have the latest technology.

I do not care for gaming on a phone - my SOC should be efficient, complement the camera and make everything smooth to operate.
If I can hit steady 60 fps in Genshin, I could not care less, I have much better gaming platforms at my disposal.

I just want to buy some new phone (now Mi note 10 lite), my preferences are:

                                        1. Cams
                                        2. Battery life
                                        3. Display (bigger better for me - 6,7 ideal)

What to buy? Im searching last 6 months and cant find something "perfect" for me :) Ideal +- 700 eur.

Now im waiting for Vivo X90 / Xiaomi 13 / Honor Magic 5 ... hope something from these will be finally my new phone.
