Weekly poll: do flagship chipsets still matter?

20 November 2022
Do you have to have the latest top of the line chip or is an older one okay? Or even a mid-range chip?

More performance, but more battery consumption in next gen processors

I noticed that the reason some smartphone makers reduced resolution from QHD+ to HD+, is cause Flagship SoCs could not natively run QHD+ at 120fps, natively. So, it seems a lot of the feature set on top Flagship SoCs are exaggerates unnecessarily.

It would also be nice to see imaging sensor tech moving to the next generation much quicker like the 2-Layer Transistor Pixel, 4/Quad Gain Sensor etc. Technologies like these two alone, could help narrow the gap with much larger pixel size sensors, and could do things to circumvent lens limitations.

Buying a 1yr flagship TSMC chip is the go, 870 is performing like a champ. My friend 860 too. I'll wait for 1yr old 8 gen 3 phone later if they make them in TSMC.

The near 5 years old SD845 is still performant enough while running A13 custom ROMs in my Poco F1. Only (minor) issue is scrolling in some rather image-heavy webpages in Chromium based browsers where frame rates can dip to a little below 60fps. I plan to only buy devices with Qualcomm flagship SoCs even if a year or two out of date. Especially because they usually fare thee best when it comes to custom ROM support.

HyperionBurn, 20 Nov 2022Dude with batteries so big phones will be super thick7000mah or 8000mah battery won't make a smartphone thickness a problem

          Smartphones with 5000mah are thin

So we are only looking at 50% thicker than a thin phone
          So it be fine

"Ray tracing" is a scam even on computer class GPUs. It's a big performance hit for making a crap ton of particles to show off lighting OR extra oily and plastic looking surfaces. Personally I think the era of flagship killer phones that are priced in 300-500 USD is gone and dead.

Poco F1 or early Oneplus phones were amazing but now Poco is just Rebranded Redmi note phones in a different body and Oneplus went on to become what they were mocking flagships for.

The best you can hope for is Samsung's A5x and A7x phones which are Okish but then they remove and add the headphone jack or memory slot just to piss people off using the same old SD 768. they are not flagship killers but not bad either.

Redmi disappoints with their chipset and camera choices time and time again ( the dimensity 1080 in their newest Note 12 pro+ does not support 1080p OIS video recording which people say is the chipset's limit) and Poco has been out of the game since X3 Pro and X3 NFC but even X3 Pro was weird because it had the better chip but worse camera set up compared to NFC.

nah... MEDIATEK D8100 kill everything in term of performance. stability. battery life. and price

No hardware matters anymore.! Only the brand.

Soc doesn't matter, so might as well just skip it.! Ram speed and amount doesn't matter, so better just skip it. Kids want slow sd cards, so better just skip internal storage too.

Power is not limit , Chips are plent powerful, but the elephant in the room for Android OEMS is Android itself.

I remember how incredibly smooth windows ran with 512MB on Lumia phone.

The next step of evolution is fuchsiaOS , which promises stutter and jank free heavy material UI at 120fps

                      Flagship SOC is important.
But right now, either Qualcomm or mediatek is same. Both good.

                      For cheaper phone,
Mediatek 8000 series is still good
But Qualcomm 7 Gen soc not really good.
And will pick mediatek over Qualcomm

I haven't bought a flagship device since the Nexus 6 in 2015. It's a waste of money. Mobile software hasn't kept up with the pace of SoC development. Devices that focus on delivering a good all around experience for a reasonable price like the Pixel a-series phones have been the best value for several years now. Previous generation flagships were the best value between the years of 2015 and 2018. Maybe some killer app will come out that really needs a lot of processing power in a mobile device, but I don't see it happening any time soon.

I do think battery size upgrades are overdue as well optimized power efficiency I am hoping will happen with Snapdragon 8 gen 2 as well

I do think given the size of smartphones today 6-7inch big and there ever increasing size of modern smartphones
Battery being very cheap in manufacturering so they add very minimum extra cost too smartphones

With this in mind i think battery sizes from
                                        6000mah - 9000mah should become standard

Yes plus energy efficiency improvement processor
                                        on top of that
and better power saver too improve battery life extended battery life even more still
