Anonymous, 24 Nov 2022Are Asians done with renaming the bog-standard Android to s... moreIt is not renamimg bog standard Android. At this year's HDC (earlier this month) they actually provided some percentage details on the reducing amount of Android code in each version of HarmonyOS.
That trend will continue. There are now over 30,000 APIs spread over HarmonyOS and HarmonyOS Connect.
They also introduced and 'new' programming language and pushed their IDE up a notch.
On the consumer facing side, they have now pulled all their apps from Google Play Store and want AppGallery to go head to head with Google in non-Chinese markets . That will require users to download and run HMS core plus AppGallery. It's a pretty big move.
Of course, if you factor in MagicOS 7 (which does run with GMS) it is almost as if it is a trojan to get HarmonyOS to even more users (assuming that MagicOS does in fact contain HarmonyOS code).

Are Asians done with renaming the bog-standard Android to something "marketing-special"?

LucaKirani, 24 Nov 2022According to sources, it will look very much like harmony o... moreThe similarities between the two systems are uncanny.
The functionality involved cannot be delivered in such a short space of time without taking advantage of an already established codebase.
It took Huawei (with its huge resource pool) at least seven years to get HarmonyOS to where it is today.
What Honor is detailing (virtually to the letter) is the functionality of HarmonyOS. The whole thing.
My guess is that, under the hood, we are seeing a re-skinned HarmonyOS (which is itself gradually pruning out Android) because Honor has nowhere near the resources of Huawei.
This can only be a win-win for both separate companies as interoperability with software and third party hardware is a must nowadays.
It also allows for GMS to be present on Honor phones internationally and maybe alongside HMS (ehem, Honor Mobile Services) which would seriously undermine GMS in the long term.
This isn't the first time Honor has run rebadged Huawei software. My Honor phone came with an Honor watch. I was supposed to download Honor Health but once installed of course the name was Huawei Health.

Why did they rollout the update on their previous Magic flagships from last year? They got the Magic4 series, why not have them part of the December rollout?

Honor is still Huawei sub brand, Huawei made a fictitious deal by allegedly selling the Honor brand so US would lift sanctions for it's sub brand and give them GMS and 5G support for chips.

What about Honor 50 Lite that hasn't even get Android 12? Surely, Honor didn't just abandon this model after only 1 year.

Huawei for Spygle addicted people. Me, personally, won't buy a phone without Kirin chip.
