Weekly poll results: flagship chipsets still matter, but most people don't need the latest one

27 November 2022
A phone with an older flagship chip is great value for money - faster than a mid-ranger but costs the same or sometimes less.

Nope, doesn't matter anymore. At least to me.

My 3yr old SM-N976F powered by the lame Exynos 9825 still going strong. Even the Snapdragon 801 on my 7yr old Lenovo K920 still alive and kicking today.

Didn't see any reasons for me to get the latest one. If it ain't broken, why bother replacing it?

But some people think that if they buy, say, a Galaxy A73 that has a 108 Mpx camera, it's the same as if they bought a Galaxy S22 Ultra because it also has 108 Mpx. And apart from that number 108, nothing else is the same.

Phones with flagship chipsets are aging slower in therms of performance than midrangers. Also photo and video processing is always better due more powerful ISP.

I do not look at phones under 600€ at all.
12T has 1/1,22 large sensor, with number of phones with sensors larger as 1/1,4" rapidly increasing! Of course size of sensor is not everithing but is factor number one.

Since there is possibility that something like Xiaomi 12 note explorer enters global market flagship phone for 1000+ is not needed if a 400 eur device will outbeat anything like nothing.

An0n, 27 Nov 2022No, it's not just 1%. 16nm fabrication for most people... moreThe guy said cortex A73, and i agree with him, Sd 820 used cortex A72, Cortex A73 is really efficient even in older manufacturing process.

Sd 835 phones even in Today standard they have amazing battery life, in 2018 we started seeing phones broke 100H Gsmarena battery test, phones like Xperia Xz1 and S8 active.

Also perfomance is ok, it can match current lowend/midrange in cpu and beat many of them in gpu.

HyperionBurn, 27 Nov 2022I think that mid range chips are powerful for 85% of people... moreI would go further and say 95% of people. It's only hardcore mobile gamers that have a legitimate use for flagship SoCs. I'm a phone enthusiast and I haven't bought a single flagship since 2015. I play 3 mobile games occasionally: League of Legends: Wild Rift, Arena of Valor, Apex Legends Mobile. Apex can be a little heavy, but I also play it the least. The other 2 run fine 60fps max graphics on 4 year old mid range phones. These are literally the heaviest tasks I'm ever running on my phone. Getting a phone with a decent SoC is super simple. Getting a phone with a decent software experience is the difficult part.

rizki1, 27 Nov 2022let the latest flagship chipsets be used on the laptop/tabl... moreThey use them in laptop? Since snapdragon 835 era flagship android soc are available in Laptop. And it doesnt mean they use less power soc like sd 8 gen 1 or Gen 2, D9200 etc they use more than 12W if you dont throttle them.

S8gen2 is the only offering from Qualcomm that can make the buyer overlook Dimensity series (if money is not problem).

This is my take - I personally don't need the fastest of chipsets. But SD and MTK cleverly integrate all their other modules around the flagship chipset only like a better modem, faster wifi, better Bluetooth, support for better audio and video codecs, and faster ram and storage support. Qualcomm especially introduces these in midrange chipsets only 1 or even 2 yrs after they introduce them in their flagship chipsets. So, I'm forced to buy flagship chipset phones...
