We benchmark the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2: solid CPU gains, impressive GPU upgrade

09 December 2022
This is a major improvement over the original Snapdragon 8 Gen 1. Even the faster 8+ Gen 1 is left miles behind, especially in GPU performance.

"" The Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 makes high refresh rate/frame rate gaming possible at FHD+, while the Gen 1 chips make you choose between high resolution and framerate. ""

What is this supposed to mean?
When I tried PUBG on my Snapdragon 855 6GB RAM Device, it ran 60 fps easily in FullHD+ in mid quality settings.
Are you telling me that the Gen 1 chips haven't touched 120 fps yet? or are you talking about higher or top quality settings?
I suppose maybe you're trying to run the ultra quality?

Looks like vivo is not using regular clock, this might be heat thing.

The Android Freak, 09 Dec 2022I think you didn't use snapdragon 8+ gen 1 phones yet.... moreI don’t think thats what the comment means, Qualcomm is pushing performance at all cost, even if the chips throttle too much.

And I have had multiple SD 8 gen 1+ phones in my hands, we are at a point now that the chips need active cooling or they WILL throttle down.

Same issue on the desktop market at the moment, pushing performance at all cost, but there you can undervolt which is not possible on a phone (it should be)

Previous leak of Vivo X90 same score.

5 cores are same as sd 8+ gen 1, two cores are minimal upgrade A710 to A715, only X3 has significant upgrade, so it doesnt make sense to reach 5000 without bump in clocks.

I have a s20Fe5G with SD865 for about 2 yrs and satisfied with it's performance. I tried SD 888 and gen1 phones and they were a disaster in thermal control. If sustained performance and thermal management of this new chip would be OK i consider buying new Samsung S-ultra phone.

I still got my doubts on it. I would think, they are just early testing the 8+ Gen 2 and there isnt going to be a Samsung only version.

However, there defintely would be a difference in maximum performance between these two phones (i.e. Iqoo 11 vs Red Magic 8 for sure.

Currently all releasing phones with the SD8 Gen 2 is using the same variant ( be it Vivo or Iqoo or the upcoming Motorola, Oppo etc.) The rumour is pointing towards a potential Samsung implementation in S23 series. Presently, i think its more to do with the software implementation of Funtouch OS and restricting maximum performance to ensure a cooler phone and sustained performance over longer period, over the plain SD reference device. I think the full gaming focused phones like Redmagic would really show the maximum ability as it comes with external cooling, allowing them the freedom to unleash the maximum potential.

We didn't have good chipset since snapdragon 870. So this is welcome change. Again, it's all about software optimisation as well. Snapdragon 888+ and snapdragon 8 Gen 1 in Motorola phones works better than any other phones.
