Zenfone 9 is a winner! mkbhd even said it's his favorite phone of the year. Compact, good cameras, good battery, good screen, top performance etc Asus is in the right path.

I've been following phone websites since early 2004 after getting my first cameraphone: Sony Ericsson T616. I don't feel that same excitement from phones like I did from 2004-2014. I briefly got excited with the iPhone X in 2017 and again with foldables from 2019-2021. But overall, while phones have gotten better and better in performance, the buzz is gone.
Phones keep getting larger and heavier. More uncomfortable fo hold with one hand or to slip into a pocket. No more headphone jack, microSD slot, removable batteries, earphones, and charger in the box. And phones generally look the same with mostly camera gimmicks on the back to keep users to keep upgrading.
Of course, techtubers like MKBHD won't tell you phones are getting boring and stale. Techtubers AKA online influencers needs to sell more phones from their "reviews" (or really sponsored ads) so they generate more views. They are being paid by Google with free phones being sent for them to talk about.

I keep reading here and there how 2022 was an exceptionally great year for mobile, and I can't wrap my head around that idea the more I see/hear it.
Phones have gotten extremely boring, predictable, pushing gimmick features to (try to) stand out. 2022's top phones are yawn-worthy at best.
