There must be a real fool making the decision to cancel the iPhone SE. it is priced right and many of us don’t need all the bells and whistles of a more fancy cell phone ! I hope the top guns of Apple will reconsider and come out with a new SE in 2024 as planned !

Even if they chose not to make any more iPhone SE or Mini version phones , people can still buy these phones for many years or decades in the used refurbished market. Long software and security support helps a lot.

Apple there is a market for smaller size phone. Don't be stingy and shut out the market for budget devices. Just put in a more date chip and continue the line. There is a market for it.

I strongly disagree. What are the sales numbers of the 2022 SE? I guess it's mweh for Apple standards, but usually that still means millions. Others dream of such "bad" sales. The 2022 SE is a phone where the value overall is a valid point for debate for anyone not locked in on either iOS or Android. But for people that simply want an iPhone that is affordable, the 2022 SE continues to deliver amazing value over its long supported lifetime. Tech reviewers are way too negative on this phone. And I don't see Apple able to convince all their lower end iPhone buyers to get expensive ones in the future. So there will have to be an affordable iPhone in some way or the other. Otherwise those people will switch to Android, it's as simple as that.

Anonymous, 15 Jan 2023Agree great size but maybe 5.8 and better specs. Not sure w... moreWell I think 5.8cm would be taking the miniturization a bit too far, the 6.5cm is a good size, that a large portion of the population can operate fully with one hand. And the 6.7 aPple are using is tolerable.
But in 2023 we would expect the display to cover a larger part of the surface than the 65% of the current SE. So to reach the corners of that with the thumb, you may have a point that it would need to be reduced further.

Mark, 12 Jan 2023Oh well so Sony 5 V or one of Asus. Small top phones have p... moreWell I agree that there certainly is a market for smaller phones - I'm one of the potential buyers. But disagree that they have to be cheaper per se. It is a bit more complex than that.

First of It is hard to make things smaller. But if the reduced size is achieved simply by removing functionality, you are right that it should reduce the total price of the parts, and thus the production costs.
E.g. there is a big difference in cost between a cropped display with same PPI and lower resolution versus a compressed display with higher PPI and same resolution.

The potentially amount of units sold also matters. The more you can sell, the thinner the common costs (e.g. development) are spread out per device.
And as huge phablets (for odd reasons) are much more in fashion than phones these years, this adds more on top of the pure hardware production cost for the less prominent devices.

So really hard to say anything simple on whether the more compact devices can be expected cheaper or not.

Oh well so Sony 5 V or one of Asus. Small top phones have place on market but they cant cost (so) much and offer (much) less (poor battery, worse pics etc) .

Apple is trying to sell its cheap series in order to get the middle to lower market target so that the use of the series can switch from its competitors. But what they did was a mistake, namely to create a cheap version of their latest chip by carrying an old, outdated chassis model. They reasoned "for the sake of overcoming the manufacturing budget" when even though they wanted to make a bigger profit with a cheaper model. And when this 3rd generation series failed, they said it became the guinea pig to try to sell this series.

Adul Al Salami Kebab, 10 Jan 2023I wish they made a SE+ instead of the tiny SE!In some ways you could say that they do exactly that, by keep on selling previous models to a slightly lower price.
So in 2023 you could see an Ip12 as an SE+

For some of us the whole point of the SE is (or rather: was) that it is less huge than the regular model.

But I totally agree with your rant about lack of small phones. Also, they're definitely right to be more expensive if they're packing more in less.
Even I had to give up, when my tiny Redmi 2 Prime weighing just 135 grams had to be replaced... with a much heavier phone.

And if they for some weird reasons prefer an Iphone, they will be out of options with the SE killed.
If I should buy an Iphone today, it would be a SE. I would even be willing to pay more for one in the SE form factor than their huger ones, if same specs otherwise.
