Three years in, keyboard-equipped Astro Slide is a dead end

05 February 2023
The IndieGoGo campaign started in 2020 and only a few units have shipped out. The company promises that things will be picking up speed soon, but at this point it doesn't matter.

It does seem like a nice device. Wouldn't mind having one. The problem is if you really want it to sell is the advertising and carrier deals you need.

Anonymous, 06 Feb 2023Oh boy, expecting Planet Computers to refund was a no-go on... moreThat sucks. Sounds like they were more amateurs than any professional business.

Difference, 06 Feb 2023You're attacking the 6400 supporters saying they are l... moreFirst, My voice already is a 0 in the 8 billion people and being in the states even my votes are worth 0 and you know what? I'm ok with this and it doesn't bother me one bit. It's not until you see the "total" number where I'd be a part of a larger %. However 6400 is an EXTREMELY small number of people. There are more people in the 5 mile radius surrounding me than 6400. The number of kids inside the local schools totals more than 6400 already. That is how minuscule that number is. That 6400 can essentially be a 0 it's that small of a number.

Second, I'd never support a product until I can get it in my hands within 2 weeks or less. I can't even imagine giving a company close to $800 dollars for a "promise" and wait almost 3 years to get the product. Your money would be better spent on an investment, helping the environment, donating it to a local charity, or just buying a product you can get TODAY not 3 years from now. Anyone who can just blow $800 dollars like that and feel ok getting nothing in return for 3 years has too much money. Use your money to do something helpful instead of supporting more DOA e-waste.

Anonymous, 06 Feb 2023"but the issue seems clear enough" Subsequent art... moreExactly! Well said! If GeminiPDA and Cosmo Communicator can so easily release their devices, why hasn't the Astro Slide shipped yet? This is a complete scam, they are literally preying upon gullible individuals. Soon they will declare "bankruptcy" due to "low interest" and be able to keep all that money they've already gotten through the crowd funding. I've seen this happen many times with other so called "crowd funded" things and it is just repeating itself again. Luckily most people have finally caught on to these scams so Astro has only been able to fool 6400 people. Easy 3 million for them and sadly 6000+ individuals who are out a good chunk of money.

blue, 06 Feb 20236400 reasons why this was a dead end. If there were 640 000... moreWell said. There are 8 billion people on this planet and if only 6400 like this product that means this product is pointless. That is not even 1% of the population. No one wants this product because things like the Z fold(first generation) exist which does the exact same thing this is doing except you can have a bigger screen, better performance, better everything basically and you can buy it for a fraction of the cost.

"but the issue seems clear enough" Subsequent articles are completely wrong.

"which means 24 SKUs to produce."
"how hard it is to crack into the smartphone world."
"Hardware keyboards especially are proving to be a huge challenge."
If these were problems, GeminiPDA and Cosmo Communicator would not have been able to ship, but they have.

"The software is reportedly very buggy."
I use Astro and the bugs are few enough. If you say there are too many bugs, try describing a lot of bugs.

The only problem is that Corona has hit a lot of small businesses critically and Astro was affected the same way.

You quote the impressions of ONE backer, and treat that as "the truth"!?! I've heard/seen quite a few that has the opposite impression. (And a few that doesn't like it too, so it is quite clear that the view on this device is divided...)
And the critical comments on Indiegogo, if you look more closely at them, you will see that most of them are from the same small group of posters, who just keeps repeating the same (sometimes untrue!) posts over and over...

Anonymous, 06 Feb 2023iPhone 13 Mini best? Best at what?Best of Both Worlds. That is a common expression that means having two different things, which gives you specific advantages.

iPhone 13 Mini is the best compact phone you can buy. It has a great processor, screen, and camera. Also it gives you entry into the iOS Ecosystem. And you can have an Android device as well with the Retroid Pocket 3+. Hence, best of both worlds.

There are other options like ASUS ZenFone 9, or Sony Xperia 5 mk IV. But having these basically you're carrying one Android device next to another. Having the variety with two ecosystems is better, because you can access certain Apps or connections you otherwise cannot.

Still have my Nokia C6, N97 Mini and Motorola Defy Pro, though the Defy's battery has seen better days. Sadly no longer have my Nokia E63 or E6, which are long gone with their rather crappy camera's. Only ever owned one Blackberry, and hated the underpowered hardware and the extremely restrictive software, and was got rid of pretty swiftly...

This suddenly made me remembered the old Motorola Droid 4/Photon Q. I love that phone's horizontal keyboard. Come to think about it, if Motorola want to make a business-grade smartphone using the ThinkPhone branding, a modern reboot of the Droid 4 is what Motorola should have done.
