I always imagine these 2MP depth + macro cameras as placeholders to have the flagship look ("wow it has 3 cameras") and to be replaced by real ultra wide/telephoto cameras when the prices for those come down. But it has been very slow.

there is SD695 for lower midrange and there are 778, 778+, and still quite rare 782 for the upper midrange

from mediatek there are downclocked 930, 900, 920, 1080 for lower midrange and 1100/1200/1300 on the upper midrange.

so while mediatek offers some variety for lower midrange, qualcomm has got a lone sd 695 for now. if there will be 6+ Gen 1 or 6 Gen 2 announcement we still will hardly see actual devices this year.

            Realme 9 pro price: £299
            CE 2 Lite price: £279.99
            Nokia G60 price: £249.99
            Honor Magic 5 Lite (x9a) price: £329.99
Honor Magic 4 Lite price: £279.99
            Moto G82 price: £279.99
            Samsung A23 5g price: £289.99
            Redmi note 11 pro 5g: £319.99
            Nokia X30 price: £399.99
            Oppo reno 8 lite 5g price: £279.99

            Etc etc etc etc

None of these handsets are sub £200. (The Nokia G60/X30 however, are now being discounted at some places).

The realme 10 pro price, available in some regions (not currently in uk), works out to be £289.99 when converted to UK pounds.

Keep in mind, many manufacturers are also recycling the dimensity 810 & 700 and helio g88/g85, along with Snapdragon 480+'s in the lower end segment.

A huge negative of the SD 695G is the limited storage speeds capped at up to 500mb read/write. Even the lower end dimensity 700/810 don't have this type of limitation.

And it has NOTHING to do with increased inflation/production costs and profit retainment????

I accept your points, but unfortunately I have a hard time believing this is the only reason. It's more likely that the SD 695G is repeatedly used due to costs & inflation, and in order to make profits, manufacturers are slowly being forced to use outdated components in order to release handsets and continue to offer them at acceptable prices. This practice helps circumvent production costs being incurred by the end consumer.

Tom209, 01 Apr 2023Some of you guys fail to comprehend. I didn't say ... moreI disagree, its because of Arm mistakes with cortex A510 and A710. These core are inefficient and mostly will be downgrade compare to current A78 and A55 cores, just look At sd 7 gen 1 state right now, and before saying it was made by Samsung compare it to sd 780G and you can see 780G is better.

Due to Chipmakers cant use new cores they keep releasing new soc or re use old soc with old cores, D8200 is new soc but use A78, even D7020 has to wait for A715 cores and Skip A710,

All low and Midrange for the Exception of D7020 and sd 7+ gen 2 use Cortex A78.

I didn't say phone prices are "high" because of patents. Learn to read.

I was referencing the patent issues with oppo/nokia. (Oppo refused to renew licenses due to patent price increases & were unsuccessful in their price lowering negotiations which were rejected by Nokia).

Secondly, the main concern raised within comments is that of a single chipset being used recurringly within the mid range segment, a chipset that is over 12 months old, when other newer chipsets within this segment are also available.

The question is the reason for this decision, as before recent world events, it was not common practice for manufacturers to release successors that incorporate the same chipsets as yesteryear.

If you're unable to see the reason for this is due to production costs & maintaining profits within the current economic climate, and has nothing to do with the SD 695's "efficiency", then you really are oblivious to current economic affairs.

                          1. Nokia license under Frand they can't overprice their patents or rising price whenever they like, those patents probably cost $1 or $2, even 5G phone Nokia Charge just $3. So saying phone price are high because of patents is wrong.

                          2. SD 695 is Best soc especially under $200, there are lot of weaker soc and you will never see people Call them out here, Dimensity 700, 810, 6020, SD 680, 685, Helio G99, G96, G88, 85 etc you need Minimum cortex A78 and SD 695 give that, even newer SD 4 Gen 1 is just SD 695 alternative.

6 Gen 1 is almost non-existatnt SoC since it was produced by Samsung with poor yields.
