People can't see one more GPU core and 2 more GB of ram from outside and literally they don't care about it. They just want final results like is it making phone faster, more fluid graphics. So first thing anyone notice in products is it's asthetics. Does it have eyecandy design? that's more important question.
And if you're saying about cars, their design change every year, you just didn't notice.
And if people only care about phone as communicator and not a fashion statement, why don't they use old flip phone. Smartphone wouldn't have invented. People more care about device as fashion statement, if you don't know this just check behavior of people who have expensive phone compared to their colleagues phone.

If things remain same then people lose interest in it.
And for your question why to risk it, company can try it on mini iphone. This will help increase their phone sale. (If you're saying that iphone sales are great now, don't forget the customers are same people who bought previous gen iphone. I'm talking about new customers.)

About the topic, it‘s not the exact same chipset because it has one more GPU Core and two more GB of RAM. Moreover, the design does have differences like the flash and bigger camera lenses. And the battery life is rated to be longer than on the 13. But even if it was the exact same design, as I said, why would I care. I use a phone as a communicator not as a fashion accessory. For what it‘s worth, I wouldn’t have a problem if car design didn’t change in the last 40 years either. I actually think many cars of then look better than new designs now.
I‘m not „defending“ a company, why would I? I‘m not 12 years old like most people here, who get buyers remorse when someone says something bad about their phone, and who actually care about what phone other people have because they say „iPhone users buy it just to show off“ bla bla. They really get offended by someone just standing there using their phone. But I‘m sure when you grow older, you will see it the same way. No adult in real life acts like the people around here.

Expected - pill shaped cutout, rounded screen angles ( its like f ellipse) and I’m guessing pathetic battery. Sure there will be a ton of features nobody will use, great promo pictures, nobody would replicate in the real world and huge price tag.
Hundreds of trillions in profit for all these years for Apple and the industry, not so much of a change. No one week battery, no under display camera…but the top model will be 2-3k$
I prefer to spend my money for travel and experience not phones.

Change for the sake of change. I still think they should have sticked with the rounded sides and screen size of the iPhone 11 Pro. The flat sides were just for making it look new/different
