Creating image sensor is not like SoC (client creates, someone else is fab) , Sony Semicon is not just manufacturing. All exmor are 100% sony semicon design.

You can either order exmor from "public portfolio" or pay more for something "personnal".

janeymac, 12 Apr 2023Looks like a great phone but what r&d are you talking a... moreSony didn't develop the IMX989 by themselves. Xiaomi co-developed it with them, hence they got dibs. Same as when they co-developed the HMX with Samsung.

Xiaomi has been pushing for larger sensors for years and this type of move from Xiaomi has been successful.

Btw, Xiaomi has also been quite transparent about the cost of the more premium Sony sensors. They do not come cheap.

Happy to hear that this will be global, unlike the 12s-series. Let's just wait and see if XIaomi and Leica finally gets the hang of the processing together - as the 12s Ultra under performed considering it's HW compared to the Xiaomi only Mi 11 Ultra with a lesser main sensor by Samsung.

Xiaomi 13 Ultra is expected to costs 37 000 CZK (1 719 USD/1 576 EUR) in the Czech republic. wow. I have no words. Galaxy S23 Ultra costs 30 000 CZK (1 393 USD/1 278 EUR) which is exacly the same price as not only for S23 Ultra but also for iPhone 14 Pro and Xiaomi 13 Pro. But that is not only Xiaomi. Other chinese phones brands are getting so expensive in Europe.

Mi 11 ultra wifi broken dark screen can't login after 6 months purchased, never buying any Xiaomi garbage.

I like the most is the stable zooming telephoto lens on 12S Ultra. And the next gen will be finally arive soon. Good for recording smooth videos.

The lenses? The cameras are from Sony, the processor is from snapdragon and the screen is from TCL so the r&d costs are mostly for other companies as these are the main components of the phone. I think the lenses are new so they might have a bit of r&d expenditure alright but it's definitely not major r&d expenditure.

Nice. Looking forward to checking this out next week
