When you export the accounts to another device, it duplicates everything. I have to clean them up myself. What good is an update if it doesn't make it better? Let's see what's next...

After 6 years Google introduce a backup feature. I dumped Google for Microsoft.

Storing recovery codes safely somewhere is also difficult task. There is no easy way to do it. Securing Google account well is one way of keeping things safe, but people usually don't do good job with that.

Then what's the point of 2fa? Wouldn't hackers gain access to my codes if they get my google account? 🤔

This arguably makes you less secure, because now anyone who breaks into your Google account can get the 2FA keys to the kingdom (even SMS, far inferior it may be, would be better against this attack vector since a hacker would have to also perform a SIM swap attack). I maintain that a hardware 2FA device like a Yubikey is the only truly secure 2FA solution.

I stopped using Google Authenticator because of the lack of back up functionality. Didn't want to use synced authenticators (like Authy) because to me they seem like a single point of failure, so instead looked for open source authenticators and after testing many I chose NinjAuth which can create encrypted zip files for backups.

Just checked, no update for me yet.

More....secure? By uploading your keys to the web? Sounds like marketing to me

I've checked it and I don't have this update yet. Is that a region-limited feature or a slow rollout or something?

I stopped using Google Authenticator and switched to Authy due to a lack of backups. Using Authy for three years now across multiple devices, and I'm happy.
