Small devices such as AirTags can easily be used to stealthily track someone without their knowledge.

Qurikyposter nailed it. But it's not only people who want to track their baggages, cars, purses or themselves. Law enforcement (police) are *very* aware of this tech, and want it to track potential suspects without any safeguards (warrants). The potential for abuse is very real. They can already track you on your smartphone; why would you want to be tracked with an AirPod or Tile to make it any easier?

It has taken a while for them to acknowledge the problem and now to finally start looking at resolving it. My opinion is that it has taken this long because they had to get as much legal clarification as possible as to how much they are to blame for people being stalked, murdered, harassed etc so that they can put out something to the world that won't get them in trouble.

Now, I disagree that this product went to market without adequate safeguards in place. It is not a weapon nor anything that would be expected to cause harm in the mind of any normal reasonable person. However some people are not normal, are unreasonable and will exploit anything they can to control people.

So clearly, it was not the Board of Directors that made this product and designed it because they would have put safeguards in knowing how it could be exploited and used. Normal people designed this product, the kind of people that would never think of using it that way.

      Sure.

Using your tags to track people has got to be the lamiest thing you could do. Defo used by controlling partners in a relationship

so users are not allowed to track others, but the tech companies tracks us 24/7 on our devices instead? hmm, fair deal, right?

Apple just made AirTag, it's the human who're misused it for whatever purpose or reason got on their minds. At least Apple is trying to help to solve the situation. Unlike certain people or companies or whatever you named it 🙄

Yeah, instead of teaming up and focusing on things really important for tech industry like raw devices security, no they're working on things that not so much people use, almost everyone nowadays have smartphones, but not everyone have smart location enabled devices, honestly they could use deep learning and IA for security and join forces to increase devices security across all mobile platforms, but no, smart tags is the only important things they have to focus on right now.
