I completely agree that manufacturers have lost the plot slightly and think that everyone wants to carry a brick. Not true. The comment below by ingerulol is spot on. I own the SE Xperia Ray also and, although I'd like to upgrade, I won't be upgrading anytime soon. Lovely display and nicely compact with great battery life. The only thing I'd like is a bit more grunt to play those .mkv's. So, I thought I'd do an advanced search on GsmArena to see if there was anything as compact but dual core with Qhd display (it is unrealistic to expect a higher-res display on a smaller handset). And guess what? I found it!
It is the Docomo Sony Xperia SX SO-05D. It is barely bigger than the Ray, yet has a Qhd (960x540) display, dual-core and weighs 95 grams. You can change the battery AND the memory card! Just want I want as a Ray upgrade. The bad news? Only the Japanese can get one. Check it out here: http://www.gsmarena.com/sony_xperia_sx_so_05d-4775.php
Also check out YouTube as a few videos on this phone. Come on, Sony. Bring it out world-wide!

samsung wont cause it takes skill to make a small compact phone with the same power.. samsung likes taking the easy route by just increasing the phone size as they increase the number of processors. try putting 8 cores into a 4.3" display phones...

A 4.2 inch display of the IPS LCD variety and a resolution of 1366*768p. Motorola Razr i design and build-quality. 2 GB of Ram and 16 GB of internal storage (expandable via micro-SD up to 64 GB). 8MP Sony Exmor RS camera with an F2.0 aperture and dual LED flash, and a wide-angle 2MP front-facing camera also F2.0. 2300 mAh Li-Po battery. Sapphire glass screen with capacitive buttons underneath the display so that the little display doesn't get smaller in usable space because of any sort of on-screen buttons. Pure Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean. Camera button. 4G LTE. And something like a BIG.little SoC that has a "little" CPU with a dual core 1.5 GHz Cortex A9 and a "BIG" CPU with a quad core 2.0 GHz Cortex A15 configuration. So a "six core" CPU and a PowerVR SGX544 MP4 GPU SoC. That would be a fantastic phone, and even though I personally like big smartphones, I see why this is needed.

Anonymous, 15 Apr 2013Samsung won't do it coz they are busy in making phones like... moresamsung have screen size of all segments n above that it has a large amount of money to spend on RnD n it can anyday bring the device what the site is asking but samsung is not a fool that it will manufacture such a small phone for only a few people coz most people will prefer screen size of around/nearby 5"... those were ols days to have a flagship phone of 4.2" screens... todays market demands high screen sized flagship phone... if sony/htc/lg/moto/sammy anyone produces a flagship phone of that size, it will certainly kill its own market coz people who care for that size are less...

Nice initiative.
This is why I like Motorola. Very small bezel on both RAZR i/M and RAZR HD. Their 4.7" RAZR HD is smaller than many phones with 4.3" screens.
The JIAYU G4 (Advanced) is also very small with regards to width. It long, but you rarely hold it in landscape with one hand.
Hopefully X phone will be maximum 4.7" and with very slim bezel, even slimmer than RAZR HD. I think this is perfect screen size and phone size.

I hate this dildo industry mentality. Bigger is not better. There is a golden size for everything. Even for screens. There are already tablets out there. What do you need more?

Although I personally prefer 4.8"-5" screen with no/little bezel, those who demand smaller profile high-end droids have rights too. If such a droid is ever to be mass-produced in 2013, it will be a direct market competitor to Apple iPhone (which I think is rather full of marketing and fashion boasts than actual functionality). This slim droid is expected to sport top-notch Chip-set, premium design/build (definitely nothing like typical Samsung), high-end display of 1080p, stock android with at least 2 years update, fast connectivity, durable battery, powerful built in office (like Apple Notes or Microsoft Word and PPT), GPS and GLONAS, offline navigation, wast internal storage, capable cmos camera with led, powerful front camera, long list of sensors, HD display output, protective glass display (e.g. Gorilla, Contour), great audio and long list of accessories. Additional features such as water-resistant, expandable storage, FM radio, USB OTG, NFC, Metal body and user-replaceable battery will definitely win this small android a great victory in small-premium market.

Motorola Atrix had the ideal size... I wonder what's the problem of making mid-sized phones... HTC First looks good too... But not the high-end inner hardware... :(

Remember the XPERIA RAY a super smartphone ARC inside hardware and just 3.3" DISPLAY . That is one hell of a performance ! I`m sick of big , large smartphones . Maximum size for me is 4.0 DISPLAY . I want a smaller top android phone . I`ll await for Sony to do it !
