First of all, India is massive in terms of population. The fact that less than 10% use iPhones might sound low but the sheer number of devices would prove otherwise. Also, most of those 10% iPhone users are actually the wealthy (upper middle class and upper class). Almost all (almost) of the android users use phones that cost 100-200 USD and 99% of them don’t even have credit cards. Despite how it seems, the iPhone market in India is pretty great and almost all of my friends who have a decent job actually own iPhones (and bitch about the absence of apple pay)

Just to rectify, all payments in the country don’t go through UPI. Credit cards (Visa, MC and Amex) are not a part of UPI and they exist independently like every other country. UPI is just a direct bank to bank transfer system which coexists with traditional credit cards.

Anonymous, 24 Jun 2023I believe 10% of Indian market is still enormous amount of ... moreIndia has 1400 million population.
          10% means 140 million.
So, if 140 million people buys 1000 usd apple phone that alone generate revenue of 140 billion for apple.
That is the reason they are focusing in india.

Although out of 1400 million people more than 800 million people don't spend 6 usd a day and they are not apple's target consumer base.

With everything else you need to manually open the certain app which have the payment feature, like I said extra steps.

Apple pay is wallet working on NFC technology while upi is contactless payment system. They are totally different apps altogether. Maybe apple pay is good as you say but only in developed countries, in india upi system is more suitable.

Insignificant news as it is just another UPI app. Even WhatsApp has UPI functionality built in, in India. The real star here is UPI itself.

UPI works even on my grandma's less than 20$ phone NOKIA 105 (2017) but that phone can't scan QR codes as it don't have camera.
It can use UPI with *99# and send money to 1) mobile number linked with UPI, 2) account number using IFSC code, with transaction limit of Rs. 5000 per day.
So, i don't care about the apple pay news.
Only rich fools with get happy with after using apple pay.

One thing i don't like about UPI is - the registration process need debit card credentials.
And debit card attracts annual maintainance fees.
The UPI system should have eliminated the debit card registration process and included mobile number OTP based registration or something like that.
As having both debit card and UPI does not make sense on cost perspective.
