this will fail due to one simple fact: the name. most parts of the non-english speaking world have problems with spelling the "th" correctly. In Germany for example, there is no "drive throu" but a "drive-in". Some terms are set in stone for generations to come. we "google" if we search something on the internet, even if we ain't using google at all. same for twitter.

Anonymous, 06 Jul 2023LOL. They don't want to control you. They just want money. You have no idea how the world operates.

This is sad. I really really REALLY wanted this to fail, but it somehow has 30 MILLION users in the first day. How so many people enthusiastically walked into Meta's surveillance platform is beyond me.

Meanwhile in the Fediverse, Lemmy, a FOSS privacy friendly Reddit alternative, took a month to get a few hundred thousand people, and Mastodon, a similar alternative to Twitter, took so many years to get to a couple million people.

I decided to try it early by downloading the app from APKMirror website. Since I'm quite active on Instagram, this is a worthy alternative to Twitter. That said, I'll still keep my Twitter account active since there are some of my contacts who don't use Instagram in the first place.

When thus app was first announced on this site one poster said he had been banned by Twitter a number of times, using a number of accounts.

How will MZ (Mark Z) police or block content, when all that is required essentially download an app be it on phone or computer.

What is to stop blocked Twitter accounts from just migrating to Threads, YE, Tate, MTG and the like.

Finally 2024 Presidential Elections, conspiracy theorist misinformation peddlers, MZ has shown a tolerance to keep accounts on platform, the last person in the room to acknowledge a problem, as this generates revenue

All I see are TWO competing that will be a race to the bottom. We've seen it before posts blocked on Twitter, remaining on Facebook.

Will there even be consistency within Meta, blocked on Facebook allowed on threads?

Theres enough social media already. Media burnout. No go joe.

People are running away from Facebook (Meta), so why would people jump onto their new platform? This new platform won't find much success either. Alternatives are good, but they need to come from a credible source.

Oh Boy, can't wait to be stuck in another echo chamber!

"Everything you share you give to us. It's been all the same since inception. If you'd really cared about privacy you'd have not shared your data with us, including your "private" photos. After all we have several dozen thousand employees. It's kinda silly to expect privacy. We gave you privacy oriented WhatsApp, be happy. And while we don't have access to your messages and media, we have all your contacts."

Not live in UK yet - I still see the countdown with around 23 hours remaining.
