They told him Lenovo developed the hinge from a similar design used on their Lenovo Yoga laptop. But, I'll be more than happy to read the information you are referring to. However, that isn't as important. We both agree Motorola introduced the water drop hinge.
Samsung not only sells foldables in China, the Z outsells all foldables except Huawei's and their market will grow. If there is a hint of infringement, I'm certain we will hear about it.

No, that's not why you are lucky. You are lucky because they have actually accepted that you were within warranty, for most people Samsung rejects any of their foldables even if they are within warranty for the smallest things.

Anonymous, 14 Jul 2023I work so I can afford it with my own money ^_^I could too and so could many many other people, that still won't make the price okay, and it still doesn't worth the asking price.

I have enjoyed the convenience of having a much smaller phone (Z Flip 3) ... but simply put, the screen blackout issue usually around 15 months onwards is prevalent to at least 12 people I know - me included. SAMSUNG described it to me as a 'common issue' - I countred that a 14 month old phone requiring a 40% top (of the original cost) not common or acceptable.
Like so many others comment ... I will wait until the next significant material quantum leap to improve durability.
Luckily i was within warranty - snd

media should stop using the term "accidental leak"
nowadays these so called leak are planned marketing move just to gauge market response so that manufacturers can re-act prior to launch

P C M, 16 Jul 2023Pal,, first use a foldable then you will know it's not... more"Pal,, first use a foldable then you will know it's not about One UI or Vanilla.. 😏"
It truly isn't about One UI or stock android, because I prefer neither of those.
If I was gonna buy a foldable I would get a vivo X Fold+. In fact scratch that. I will buy a vivo X Fold+ in a couple of months.
Why not the X Fold 2 at that point? Camera, the Fold+ has a periscope lens which is important to me, especially at that price.
The thing is, I'm very well aware of why One UI is "superior", when it comes to foldables, but I don't use any of those features that Samsung's folding phones can do, but others can't, and aside from that the Flip series is not for me, wheras the Fold series just doesn't have the best camera on a Fold anymore, has a very boring design in my opinion and has a UI that I dislike, so that's that.
Samsung's durability issues with their Flip and Fold series are still very much a thing tho, tests or not, real life experiences show the true nature of those phones.

Also the waterdrop hinge itself is the culprit for breaking.

Also the patent didn't come from laptop. The hinge predates almost 10 years so is the development of Motorola foldables.
It's like Samsung pentile patent. No matter who you are how good you try to market display or say superior tech, the moment they used pentile it's payment to Samsung.
Pentile is mostly unused lately in higher end.

My friend had a Z Flip 4, which broke in 4 months and he is part of a Samsung Foldables forum and these phones never even last a year for most people.
Look up Austin Evans, or rather the channel "This Is", on YouTube and check out his video about it.
I'm not saying the Moto is better, but it for sure can not be even worse.

Better chipset.. yeah I mean the 8+ Gen 1 is so slow and outdated.. man it can't even handle basic tasks.. /s
In all seriousness, you will not see the difference between the 2 chipsets, unless you game a lot, in which case get a gaming phone, or a regular slab flagship phone, because any Flip type phone will just overheat and run out of battery quicker than the average person would realise that I don't like Samsung. lol

P C M, 15 Jul 2023Has anyone ever thought that this might be about the foldin... moreDespite the recent dummy leaks, it is now confirmed the Fold and Flip close "flat" so there could be royalties, but there is much to consider.
1) Like you, I also credit Motorola for the water drop hinge, but a Huawei executive said “If you see that there are no gaps in the foldable smartphone of any company, then Huawei’s patents must be used”. Motorola's patent was based off their Lenovo Yoga laptop so it was already in use and predates Huawei's patent. Since they both have a patent, there must be differences even though the results are similar.
2) Is Oppo, Vivo, Honor, Xiaomi and Tecno using Huawei's or Motorola's hinge patent? Are they paying royalties? They haven't said anything and Oppo was more than forthcoming about the effort and years they put into making their hinge. I rarely hear about Chinese companies suing each other. Maybe they just have an understanding amongst each other for now.
3) Samsung also has a waterdrop patent from 2016 that predates Huawei's. Their dumbbell patent uses the same idea of folding the panel away from the center, thus creating the teardrop. For all we know, they could be receiving royalties for their hinge patent which would be a total slap in the face to Z owners, but it won't matter in two weeks.

Anonymous, 15 Jul 2023Lenovo Razr 40 Ultra has SD 8 GEN 1, not GEN 2 like Flip 5 ... moreIt has the 8+ Gen 1, not the regular 8 Gen 1, and aside from that you will not see the difference between that and the 8 Gen 2, unless you game a lot, in which case both of them will just overheat and the battery life will suffer too big time.
The Razr 40 Ultra has a better display and a better + bigger outer display too, the latter being the main point of these kind of phones and it looks much more modern as well.
I see this as a no-brainer, but to each their own I guess.
If I wanted to spend this much on a phone I would just get the now cheaper Z Fold 4, or pay a little more and get the vivo X Fold+ (because I prefer Origin OS over One UI), but I do believe for this much money, the best option for someone who likes Samsung the most, would be to spend a little less and get the Z Fold 4, or pay a little more and get the Z Fold 5, or get the S23/+/Ultra if they don't want a folding phone, but this Z Flip 5 ain't it and won't be it for this much money.
