I was thinking of buying one of these devices after someone stole a small bag from me a few days ago. Now I won't buy, after this update. What's the point?

blue, 28 Jul 2023So many ways to block targetted ads and still someone compl... morePlease list the ways to turn off targeted ads which actually works and provide some proof.
Do you even believe that advertising can be non targeted?
What is the point of showing ads if the user is not going to be interested in the product/service? Why would any advertiser pay any money to show ads to the wall?
Also, do you have any proof if you have been seeing non targeted ads? Did you compare ads you are getting with your friends? How did you decide Ad company aka Google is not showing you targeted ads when their primary business is selling ads and customer data for their profits?

The concepts and implementation details of these AirTags are so abusable it's laughable that Apple introduced these under the filthy old guises of keeping you safe, healthy, caring for your property, privacy etc.
Don't buy them, and try your best to stay away from them.

Sounds so abusable. Planning to breaking up with your partner?
- Register an air tag with with their phone (or steal one of their tags)
- Break up with them and take the tag with you
- Weeks later charge them with stalking and get a restraining order
It's then their word against yours.

So this makes AirTags practically useless as a random person in a public space with an Android phone can just scan for any AirTags around them, gets a glimpse of your personal info, and disable hem.
Well, so much for that. It was a good short run.

I've dremel-d a hidden Apple tag into my very expensive SFF workstation which I carry around for on-site / studio work for many of my projects and it cannot be tethered down with a kensington lock at all times in public places.
This change makes that tag pretty useless. What an absolute garbage move this is by both of these companies.
They won't think twice to punish the majority of Tag users who use these things legally by setting the rules keeping only the illegal activities in mind. What's the point of buying ANY airtags in this case if thieves can easily disable it without any repercussions?
Apple signed off on this, so BOTH of these companies should face lawsuits from legal users who have their baggage, items, electronics, pets, etc, stolen and then get their tags disabled by the criminals, once such things start happening (and it WILL happen soon, knowing how trashy human beings really are).

So this will basically make the main point of buying a tracker, to prevent theft, useless. The thief will just disable any tracker they detect. Pointless product now.

not a bad idea until you think that this makes the air tags useless for what most people use them for ie if there stuff gets stolen.

These Air Tags weren't reliable in the first place. I've seen a few videos about people testing them for things like bikes. Now they are useless because the thief can just disable it. What is the point now? I guess you can still use it for your keys? You can make it play a sound so you can locate your keys. I never lose my keys though so it's officially useless for me.
Are they going to put like a 4 hour timer before you get the notification? A lot can happen in 4 hours...
