Samsung Galaxy Z Fold5 in for review

31 July 2023
The Flex Hinge is a game changer and Samsung has a clever new design for a cover with an S Pen holder.

New case with S pen 42 grams , old one for fold4 is 52 grams. Still to heavy.

Most overpriced and most overhyped foldable in existence.

Akarius, 01 Aug 2023Seriously, if you're a regular person using the phone ... moreAs a user from since F2, I have never put any extra care with this phone and treat it like a normal phone. I can say it is tough enough to survive the daily usage.

I however have experienced inner screen protector bubbling after around 8months. It happened with the F2, with thr F3 and now the F4. Its like the limit for the glue of the protector is about 6 to 8 months and it just starts bubbling up in the middle area right around the cringe, i mean hinge. I have no issues with it, its just a sticker i know, but dusts gets in between the protector and screen when it has the bubbles. The same thing happened with my brother's Fold 4, and a friend's Flip 4. The problem is the replacement for this protector is NOT free, it costs about 30 dollars, and there is only 1 service center here in the whole country that officially do it.

Also the gap doesnt bother me at all. I got used to it and for me that is not an issue. I would have appreciated if they imporved the camera at least.

I would also like to say, as much as i think think there is very little upgrade with the Fold5, i still feel the need to upgrade. FIrst, i still have no confidence that thr Fold will last for a long time. AND SECOND, i only have 1 year of samsung care+ and IF something happens with this phone the inner screen alone costs about 500 dollars to repair. I always avail the swap promos and i got the F4 last year for about 1000 dollars(with free watch) after i swap the F3.

I am however trying to get my hands on the Honor V2. If i can have that i would ditch the fold in a hewrtbeat.

Core, 01 Aug 2023Well, you're getting a bit into semantics there. Perha... moreI think I would say that it's irrelevant whether we're diving into semantics head on or just barely feathering the subject, when the underlying statement is simply false. This phone shuts flat, period. Claiming otherwise because there's a tiny see-through hole visible - now that's splitting hairs, clear as day.

But I agree with the rest of your comment. I have ZF4, it doesn't close flat and it doesn't bother me in the slightest. If it did, and while doing so completely sealed the inner screen from anything getting in - I couldn't be happier for not needing to remove the dust as I have to now (still doesn't bother me, but such improvement would be welcome).

Now all they need to do is enlarge the outer screen, then - with more space available - add storage compartment for the S-Pen in the screen half, and bigger battery with faster charging in the body half, and I would say it (with its software and IPx8 rating) would be the most complete package of any foldables.

Perhaps the person complaining about it used the wrong word, but it doesn't change that competitors have been actually closing their foldables tight for a bit while Samsung still quite doesnt, even if it's a major improvement over the Fold 4s situation, but then again that's nothing to write home about anyways.

It's not exactly just flexing on meaningless things either, as of course a tighter "seal" will keep dust and particles away from the inner screen. Then again, I guess not having it so tightly shut might protect the screen WHEN there is some crap between the screen so its not so tightly shut.

For me personally, I'll rather have it shut well, although I havnt considered that a problem when demoing a few different Z Fold 5s

Come on, we're supposedly an intelligent culture, surely one can see a difference between measurable geometric distance between parallel surfaces and a see-through hole between them? They're not even synonyms...

It's not meaningful but again something like Motorola does not have light shrine through when closed.

Anonymous, 31 Jul 2023it still doesn't actually close flat tho, just look at it Looks perfectly flat to me, with the gap between both halves equidistant from the hinge to the outer ridge. Got a microscope in your eyes that you can tell from an average resolution image the .001 mm difference? I can't.

Digdigfig, 01 Aug 2023Thank you for the reply. I for one won't get a foldabl... moreSeriously, if you're a regular person using the phone in a regular way, the screen will be just fine. I may not be the best case scenario, because I have ZF4 for just two months now, but I don't employ any extra care with the inner display, apart from making sure no sand gets inside when I play in a sandbox with my son. Other than that, I either use S Pen when I can, or just use hands when chatting, reading news while on a smoke - any other situation when I can't use it two-handed. And if I'm to be honest, when direct sun light hits a specific angle, I can see a couple of microscratches here and there from all the screen cleaning I do because I bloody hate fingerprint smudges or dust on the screen. I clean it up at least 6 times a day, color me pedantic.
But when you consider it's a plastic screen protector, it's expected its scratch resistance will never match Gorilla Glass (unlike some laymen who think bending glass is achievable by mere expression of their desire for it to happen).
From my experience, you really have to treat the phone like garbage to destroy the screen in some months because me, using it like a regular phone with barely any extra care, I don't seem to sufficiently impact the screen in any negative way, and I tend to be a bit overzealous when it comes to cleaning it. As I was with any phone I had.

Not to mention I would probably not fit the tablet in my pocket whereas the phone does.

X3 has beautiful moden design with rounded corner, it is much slimmer , much lither, yet it has bigger screen with slimmer bezels, bigger battery with much faster chargin, NO visible crease, and above all - vastly superior cameras set.

It simply make Z fold 5 design outdated. Its unfortunate Huawei has ban for 5G and GMS. It shows Samsung how foldable can be design properly and modern.

This is difficult to explain, but the Z5 feels different vs. the Z4. When I picked up the Z5, I immediately felt the difference in the weight. When I held them side by side, I didn't notice it as much but I felt it again when I just used the Z5.

It's a good direction and I'm worried about the Z6. I personally prefer the candy bar shape, but I don't think Samsung is going to keep this design. I don't think they can add a larger screen and bigger battery without losing the feel of the Z5. Not to mention the possibility of a s-pen or better camera hardware.

I would love to know how the Vs2 or Mate X3 feels, but this is a good weight for the Z5 and I hope Samsung continues in this direction.

I have been using the S Pen in the past 2 years without any traces on the screen. With Fold 5, Samsung even removed the retractable S Pen because it simply does not harm the screen.
