the only different with oled in iphone and galaxy are:
different software-calibration and more aggresive brightness setting on iphone (go check iphone display setting and look for "reduce-white-point")

Either that or their displays were only ending up in iPhones for the Chinese market. If their screens start ending up in global or US market phones, I'd expect them to quickly end up on a sanction list just like YMTC did.

Kangal, 02 Aug 2023The OLED used in iPhones is actually different to the ones ... moreWait, I thought Apple and LG were investing in MicroLED, not microOLED? (At least from the Apple Watch rumour mill).

The OLED used in iPhones is actually different to the ones used in Galaxys.
Apple has much stricter requirements, and they use different parameters for its properties.
I thought this bogus, but if you look at the iPhone X, it has a different temperature, colour gradient, brightness compared to the Samsung S9+. Also if you look at the Used Market, you would see that majority of Samsung S9+ phones suffer major fault with screen burn-in. Yet for some reason the older iPhone X actually doesn't. There are less instances, and when it does it is usually more subtle.
Samsung has been the exclusive provider of Luxury OLED screens to Apple. Not only do they have the best technology, but they have the experience to produce it too. From the rumour mill, its said that BOE is using "borrowed" intellectual property, expertise, and reverse-engineered technology. Meanwhile, LG is primarily an LCD developer and their research into OLED was mostly into larger appliances like TVs. Even if both companies can make competent Mobile-OLED screens, they still need to go that one step further, and make it to the strict specifications that Apple dictates.
Just as a sidenote; Apple has provided LG with a large sum of money, and Apple is actively racing against Samsung to develop "Synthetic OLED" technology using LG's facilities. If successful, we will see True micrOLED coming to Apple Watches, iPhones, iPads, Macs, and the Apple Vision Pro... and get displays with all the advantages of LCD and OLED in the one package, without the disadvantages of the other.

I don't understand: HOW is BOE still a supplier for Apple, when they're always having issues every year? The only reason I can think of is by undercutting their competitors in price... But is the price difference really that significant? Is the deal really worth it, especially when more issues can lead to less consumer trust in the brand?
(I don't know anything about anything, I'm just asking questions.)

justasmile, 02 Aug 2023It's always Samsung that's supplying that.Samsung is practically the best in OLED panel right now, in the tech, quality, and volume. It makes sense for Apple to do business with them for the best parts for their $1000 phones.
But the fact that Apple is maintaining BOE shows how Apple is such a cheapskate and greedy. The fact that Apple is letting these things slide for BOE means they must offer Apple a deal that's so cheap that Tim Cook couldn't ignore.
