TSMC will build a fab in Europe for 28/22nm and 16/12nm chips

08 August 2023
This will be a boon for the local automotive industry, don't expect smartphone chipsets and GPUs to come out of that foundry.

This will be excellent more fabs being made is something I look forward too as this helps keep pricing down and being less dependent is ideal solution too many problems which happen over who owns the property and software just too much conflicts user agreement license problems with software & hardware

Anonymous, 09 Aug 2023Even the TSMC press release made it a bit hard to find this... moreI believe some news did mention Germany giving them insane tax benefits (who could have thought, right?!). For old tech. Oh well, it's not like us internet commenters have a say in anything, really. The world has been split up and is being consumed by the 0.1%. Enjoy the show!

Kind of surprising that both TSMC and Intel (Magdeburg) are building their new EU fabs in the former GDR. Anyone know if that gets them special bonus tax breaks?

"TSMC will build a fab in Europe"
Why is gsmarena hiding the exact place?
It will be built in Dresden, Germany.

when will they open shop in india?
our prime ministers are trying since ages to bring chip shops in india but failed for more than 30 years probably.

            come to india.
            open up your shop.
more than 500 million people are not participating in global labour force in india out of 1400 million population.
around 450 million are actively participating in labor force.
In shopping malls the lowest salary per month is at around or between 100 to 150 USD.
so i think india can become the cheapest option for not only chip but any industry.
            Namaste.

Anonymous, 08 Aug 202316/12nm sounds alright, but 28/22nm? That's already to... moreNot everything is about smartphones, my man. Most of this transistor business isn't about luxury civilian stuff, but big industry and the military.

[deleted post]If you judge sovereignty by whether to participate UN then it is 100% safe to assume that Confoederatio helvetica was never a country until 2002

I heard Slovakia will be a possibility for this foundry lets see.
For such small country like mine is we have a Samsung factory for TVs and a 6 car manufacturers which is pretty impressive also one of biggest steel mills and iron mills in europe.

nik, 08 Aug 2023the larger the transistor size, the more energy it will use... moreOf course smaller transistors use less energy, but in a car or washing machine it does not matter if the micro controller uses 0.01 watt less to compute very basic operations. Fact is, wafers produced on more advanced processing nodes cost much more than those on older ones. The chip on a smaller node will be smaller, when using the same transistors, but that doesn’t offset the even larger cost difference between older and newer nodes. Otherwise, everything would be on 4nm.

Taiwans official name is Republic of China, while the one we call China is officially People's Republic of China.
