It... more4 years ago Huawei had become one of the top 3 manufacturers in the world catching up to Apple and Samsung in what was considered a very short amount of time and I believe they had surpassed either Samsung or Apple in worldwide sales before the ban and were already in second place.
Outside of smartphones they were also one of the largest(if not the largest) manufacturers of internet and mobile internet equipment. There is a huge amount of cell towers and internet routers made by them in Asia, Europe and Africa(don't know about the Americas and Australia but pretty sure they had a presence all over the world).
This to say that they were indeed greatly popular and probably the only Chinese brand to have the name and capability to become the Chinese Apple/Samsung.
With the US imposing the sanctions - they did get what they wanted short term(significantly reducing their sales and influence in the 5g sphere). Long term, however, they created the opportunity for an actual third competitor to Android and iOS as well as a working alternative to GMS should Huawei recover. And while it obviously something like this takes years, it seems like it is slowly becoming a reality.

Anonymous, 12 Aug 2023They're the "5G leader"...but had to develop... moreNo patents were infringed. It's Huawei who is SANCTIONED. Huawei still retains many 5G patents that their 5G sanctions prevent them from properly utilizing. This is gonna change once Huawei gets 5G on its hands again.
I, for one, welcome it. I was too late to join the 5G bandwagon before my country started ripping Huawei hardware out of the cell towers. And in my experience, 5G post-Huawei has been poor at best. I really wish Huawei were to return to my country. I will be outraged if Huawei's 5G hardware actually makes a positive difference. If it does, then shame on America for sanctioning Huawei.

Then you went on to say that they aren't popular because of the lack of play store. None of the manufacturers have play store in China, never did.

You'd see I mentioned it's the OS and lack of 5g combined that make them poor purchases. If huawei released international 5g phones with harmonyOS AND a strong ecosystem, they would be as big, if not bigger then Samsung. People want mored options and more competition. Nothing rn stands up to android or IOS
