In the era when software update is biggest flex for companies actual practical engineering goes down the drain . And people are well.. they listen to youtubers . Almost none of them ever tore down a smartphone in their life .

Hey Google, if device longevity homely is a top priority for you, why have your permanently removed automatic, global system updated from the Linux core you built Android on?

This is nothing but smoke and mirrors to distract from the durability issues of the Pixel Fold. Empty promises and deception. Just like Apple, your rotten rule model is pure greed.

Valentin, 12 Aug 2023I find this to be great news, although strange that it'... more> Since when can they set rules for other manufacturers since their OS is open source?

The parts of Android that are open source don't include i.a. all the Google Play stuff (not just the Store, but also Services that are needed e.g. to run Google Maps).

OEMs can of course do the Amazon thing and provide their own environment on top of the open-source parts of Android. It worked for Amazon on tablets and TV dongles, but their phones were a huge failure.

I find this to be great news, although strange that it's coming from google... Since when can they set rules for other manufacturers since their OS is open source? Anyway I like the idea of more quality control on the foldable market, some brands really just use fancy stuff like 1 gazzilion folds based on nothing and then we have to pay the damage when something occures. We are a few years now into the foldable game so it's about time someone makes some standards

Why 3 years of security patches? Everything should end just with the one year warranty. So that people can buy new phone every year.

It will be better if they don't release any update at all. Just get the device as it is at launch and that's it. No repairs, no update no warranty may be then the greed of these manufacturers will get filled or may be then the eyes of some government officials will open throughout the world (don't know in which realm they live, whether they know about common people or just forgot due to abundance of money and power) and not just in Europe.

(I am talking about the new trend of $1000+ flagship smartphones)
