Fairphone 5 specs leak: up to 8 years of support, new AMOLED display, more modules

30 August 2023
The new phone will be more repairable and more durable to boot. And it will have three 50MP cameras. Unfortunately, it will be pricier than its predecessor too.

Anonymous, 05 Sep 2023You forgot about Samsung's XCover6 Pro. That phone als... moreTrue but the Xcover ones do have removable back and battery but is nowhere as easy to repair as the Fairphones. They require a lot more tooling and knowledge to self repair. And yes, they do have a jack, yes. I invite you to try to repair one with just a Philips screwdriver. That will be fun.
If a jack is that important for you then don't go for Fairphone but please don't go for premium devices either as the don't offer it either and are (some) twice the price of a Fairphone. A perfect world does not exist.

YUKI93, 02 Sep 2023Sony, ASUS, and LG can give IP65/68 dust and water resistan... moreSony and all others you mention are not modular phones now would you want to "self repair" them unless you're confident enough to do so. So your argument doesn't stick. It's not about the buds, it's about modularity and self repair-ability. Sure, the buds are of course additional income that will be a tad more than wired earplugs but that will not be the main argument to cancel the port. Fairphone isn't the company with a shitload of designers, developers... as the big boys you mention so there is also a question of allocating resources where it matters and that is certainly not an audio jack port. Older Fairphones had one but they weren't waterproof at all, not even water repellent. Much more basic phones that the gen 4 & 5 ones. In short, of course it's all possible when you have the means but besides that, I would be more offended by the fact that the so called real premium devices not only lack the jack port but also lack any kind of SD card slot just as an excuse that the want to put more power in a "compact" design which is bullshit of course. It makes no sense that a cheap devices has all of this without being bigger than their premium siblings and that the latter ones have to cost several times more and lack all of it. Fairphones aren't cheap nor are they premium. Their price comes out of the concept of fair materials, modularity and it's a small company. If that's something you cannot live with, then don't buy it and keep on buying whatever you want but please don't come complaining that you had to pay big money because your battery went sour of your screen (or glass back-plate) cracked and they ask you almost the amount you would need for a new one because that is what they want you to do.

YUKI93, 02 Sep 2023Sony, ASUS, and LG can give IP65/68 dust and water resistan... moreYou can't compare a glue shut device with an modular one that can be taken apart by just unscrewing the screws. That is a HUGE difference, by such a device, one hole less can be a big help. Anyhow, it is probably not that the issue, but more like the fact that 3.5 jack becomes irrelevant, and only a very tiny group of people still wants it like it is something that can't be replaced. Tech runs further and the remaining few need to get over it, audio over USB or Bluetooth are the standard now, and this device can do both.
I also do not think they removed the jack to make Bluetooth buds, it is more like they removed the jack because they understand it's absolence and well, decided to take advantage of it and make some earbuds.
To understand it better: you can put it this way, think about fairphone installing the 3.5 jack and then making wired in ear headphones, would you still blame them for doing it? Nope, because you would find that accusation ridiculous. Well now after more then 5 years of bluetooth earbuds and usb headphones you still think Fairphone wants to milk the proverbial "caw" with some earbuds? At this point i find the accusation to be the same as the one in the first example... ridiculous.

atichko, 01 Sep 2023The removal of the jack was driven by the reparability and ... moreSony, ASUS, and LG can give IP65/68 dust and water resistance ratings on their phones without removing the headphone jack, so it's not justifiable to remove it for a lower-grade rating. Also, Fairphone launched its wireless earbuds at the same time as the Fairphone 4, and it was the first Fairphone model without a headphone jack. Coincidence? I don't think so.

Mike0902, 31 Aug 2023I love the idea, especially being able to change the batter... moreUse "fair" materials and a "fair" production (for as much as possible in a very dirty industry and supply chain) cost more. Developing components that can easily be removed and reassembled again costs more in every sense. This phone is not for people that have been conditioned to pay big money to have the latest and greatest mobile gimmick regardless of any negative impact before it became your newest toy to show off with. This a phone for people who are fed up with a piece of hardware that is very costly to repair when needed and who got disgusted with the fact that each year there's a new toy replacing yours while yours is doing everything as it it should according to your needs but where you're constantly triggered to buy a new one, even through means that should be forbidden like programmed aging of key components or asking exuberant repair fee's in the hope you'll opt for a new one instead. People who don't need massive brainpower (and actually the majority of consumers don't need it even if the shout out loud that they do), just enough so the thing does what it needs to do with some spare capacity. Technology is not only brute power because that's easy (figure of speech). It should more be "getting the most out of the little through optimisation" and doesn't happen enough. Every company behind any OS claim they are doing that and they do but that's the small part of the efforts, the biggest part is developing even more "useful things" (cough cough sorry) that are even more demanding on the hardware and thus ruins the little effort they do in terms of efficiency. They only focus of efficiency when they launched new versions that are so bad that they have no other choice than to optimize.

YUKI93, 31 Aug 2023I don't think the camera is the main priority for this... moreThe removal of the jack was driven by the reparability and improving IP rating as well as (just as for model 4) allowing a bigger battery which isn't simple if you want to keep a phone in a somewhat decent size. Who knows, if in the future modular technology improves in terms of downsizing, Fairphones could develop more efficient designs in terms of used space for the parts. Anyhow I do agree as well that their earbuds are all but reparable or durable as their main product but at least they have the guts to recognize that not all is fair, durable or repairable. One thing I really miss is a cradle where you could not only charge your Fairphone but also separate batteries. You can remove the back (hallelujah) and swap the battery but recharge the spare one you have to do it using the phone which is all but optimal. It's unknown how power efficient the chip will be in a smartphone knowing it has not been designed for that application. A spare could be more of a necessity than luxury. To be seen (but the first reviews on YouTube aren't positive regarding power consumption)

The QCM6490 basically has the same CPU as the 778G/778G+/780G/782G and a GPU that almost match the 865/865+/870 performance**.

Mike0902, 31 Aug 2023I love the idea, especially being able to change the batter... moreThe price does sound expensive at first. But when you realized that it'll get ten years of software support and you can easily buy the spare parts from their websites and repair it by yourself, it suddenly becomes a great value in the long term. This might sounds overly optimistic, but if only €1000+ premium smartphones have this kind of privilege.

After all, it's still good enough for everyday use. But the lack of headphone jack is a dealbreaker, especially when Fairphone always talk about long-term sustainability. Removing it for the sake of selling wireless earbuds isn't going to make things any better.

Do you really understand what you are saying? If you have a phone without microSD card slot, the only way to get bigger storage is to completely replace the phone and do the whole transfer or redownloading. With microSD card, I never have to worry about redownloading the files as I already have it transferred waiting to be used in seconds.

"Its an ancient archaic dark age technology invented back in 1867 i think."
By that logic, every professional audio technician should not be using the much more superior wired headphones, aren't they? They can live with the latency lag because it's... what's the word again, "ancient"?

I know you never use them, but don't expect the rest to be on the same boat thinking they are the same as you. 🙃

I love the idea, especially being able to change the battery which, let's face it, is why we change our phones every couple of years or so. We junk perfectly good electronics simply because the power runs out and, imho, is why none of the major manufacturers make models with replaceable batteries simply to keep the cash flow going. £700 is a ridiculous price for a phone with mid range specs though, I would expect a Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 for that price, then I might be interested. Over to you Fairphone, at the moment it's thanks but no thanks.

justasmile, 31 Aug 2023They're from 5 years ago, of course they're still... moreNo, one of them is from 7 years ago, and the other is from 6 years ago.. see how you have no idea about any of this?

Why does it matter anyways? If those are still okay despite not getting any updates, than this Fairphone 5 should absolutely be okay with a chipset that is about 3 times as powerful as the 820/821 and it's going to get updates as well.

DarlingYext, 31 Aug 2023I do, it's just simply wrong. That's all there is... moreThey're from 5 years ago, of course they're still ok.

What I'm trying to say is that in a world of future phones this phone will feel slow especially with the chipset.
