And that's why so many of them own flagships. They get it cheaply through carrier deals. If they had to pay the full price upfront, most of them would switch to mid-rangers.

      i'm also willing to bet this is due to carrier deals/installment plans

      the biggest modern day scam IMO is trapping people into paying off their phone. i understand it's a good way to get a good phone in an affordable way, but it feeds people's desire to have the "latest and greatest" and always paying for that

        [deleted post]What's a "normal" phone? An Android phone? If you're accustomed to iOS, why would you want to switch to a cheap Android phone?

          Many people here have gotten close, but haven't quite gotten it yet. The reason why do many people but from the carriers is because they actually offer deals (for trade in, or bill credits if you add lines) when Apple pretty much never offers any discounts at all. (And even their trade in values suck unless you have last year's model, unlike Samsung who boosts trade in values every time they launch a new Galaxy).

            This comment is so wrong!
            "carriers have thousands of brick-and-mortar locations, while Apple has about 300."

            Most Americans buy from carriers becos' of the contract that allows them to buy at a discount. They are paying the iphone off using the contract period that has installment plan baked in.

              [deleted post]1) No one buys a phone to "show off";
              2) 50% of all active smartphone in US are iPhones. What is there to "show off"?

                [deleted post]„Normal phone“?

                  I think it's the same as Indonesia, I found a lot of old iPhones that are carrier locked... if you buy them from an authorized it can be more expensive but you get a warranty and the phone is not locked.

                    And often get new phone. Basically yearly or every 24 months.
                    The 6 versions of iOS given are in vain.

                      The deals are too good to not take advantage of.

                      Unless you absolutely need a factory unlocked device, why would anyone NOT get their phone from a carrier? I got my S23U for $200 because T-Mobile trade-in deal. A few months before that I got a Z Flip4 for FREE.

                        Yep. That's us. Everyone mostly gets their phones in general via carrier to pay for the phones in a 24-30 month process.

                        Considering how much carriers want you to upgrade every year, it's like they want you to constantly pay for a phone; like a car lease.

                          I couldn’t imagine just walking into an Apple Store and buying an iPhone at MSRP when I know resellers have them for $200 less.

                            Makes sense, their stores are more like a show room to see and experience their devices, get help with issues and ask questions. Similar situation here in UK. I wonder how it is with Samsung in that front?
