USB 2 can be phased out, without any pain to anyone as USB is backwards compatible.
But I would support USB 4 to do the same thing that USB did all these years, increase compatibility including backwards compatibility. And to reduce dependence on any one company.

Almand, 17 Sep 2023Honestly, USB 2.0 in this age, should be banned now.I agree. They're still milking the USB 2.0 port since usb C came into existence. This makes you buy cloud storage since your backups to the PC will be slow. SMH.

Start reading USB 4 2.0 Spec DOESN'T allow for 3-lane 40Gbps. If anything, it's just a less stricter version of Thunderbolt 5 with less bandwidth. Again it's just a freaking USB standard, Intel, AMD, Apple.... Literally ANYONE can use it anyway. 🤦♂️

James Holden, 12 Sep 2023USB 4 supports 40Gbps. Maybe make USB 4.5 with 80Gbps and U... moreAs late as possible, if you'd ask Intel. Intel has a big foot in both "standards" and they're making money off the TB mess, so they will obviously do what they've always done, slow the progress of USB as much as they can.
An other thing for Vestager and the EU to look into. They have a loooong list of antitrust issues to fix, mostly because the US counterpart doesn't give a flying one about consumers.

USB 4 supports 40Gbps. Maybe make USB 4.5 with 80Gbps and USB 5 with 120Gbps.
It's a shame that we're still lagging in transfer speeds on USB C. Todays phones under $800 have usb 2.0 type C. Just a handful have 3.1 which is a mere 5Gbps.
When are we gonna see USB 4 40Gbps on high end phones as well as budget laptops? We need faster transfer rates now more than ever.

Thos won't be very impactful now but in time it will become the standard

Now if only Thunderbolt was just a USB standard, and the USB consortium required every USB 4 cable to use Thunderbolt 5. Also, I wish they discontinued USB 2.0 entirely, and pushed people onto USB 3.2 for the lower-end hardware and USB 4.0 120Gbps (Thunderbolt 5 essentially) for the higher-end hardware. Then every phone could have video output and use DisplayPort signals.
