Weekly poll results: the OnePlus Open is great, but buyers balk at the price

28 October 2023
The wide availability of the Open brings it to markets that previously didn't have much competition. But that price tag is hard to swallow for most.

Anonymous, 29 Oct 2023There were like cheaper multitasking devices like LG dual s... moreI couldn't agree more. I used to own a foldable phone before selling it and bought my LG V50 with its detachable Dual Screen case. I can easily vouch that I never miss my old foldable phones and have zero intention of returning to them ever again. All those popular sellouts who always dismissed it as a "gImMicK" never understand such a thing anyway. There are far better and more intellectual indie reviewers like Juan Bagnell and The Tech Preacher who can easily make full use out of it.

Ridiculous a company the size of Oneplus don't offer any sort of 12 or 24 months interest-free credit or on a contract through a UK network £1600 is a lot up front

250 euro early bird discount and free buds pro 2 is a pretty good deal

I don't think Open deserves a price tag of Rs. 1.4 Lakh. Its trying to milk initial demand and prices will fall, when it stops selling.
I consider Oneplus a tier 3 chinese brand, and its aiming for Apple/Samsung pricing.
And that's not a big problem, but Oneplus isn't perfect at creating phones. They've had terrible problems like ghost touches, etc in their phones.

All this commotion makes me further love my dual screen G8x, though I keep it at single screen mostly.

I also feel that Rs. 1.4 lakhs for a foldable phone in India is too much. I love the brand OnePlus and their recent products like pone plus tab, Nord 3 but I may wait till the price comes down. But by that time OnePlus open may be old and I may loose intetest thetein.

Ok, I get it...folding phones are expensive. IF you are a Samsung phone...
But a 3rd tier company like OnePlus? A SUB BRAND of Oppo? Every One Plus phone is a cheaper version of the more premium Oppo phone. The OnePlus One, was nothing more than a few features missing Oppo Find 7.
OnePlus should DROP the price to around 1,000 dollars (US). Sell it CHEAP like they did the OnePlus One, to grab market share and put pressure on Samsung et al.

I live in Hungary, where the average median income is about 1/3 of the same metric for the US and OnePlus charges 1899 EUR (equivalent of $2020 currently) and they don't even offer the same trade-in deal they run in the US! Lack of wireless Apple CarPlay support, lack of wireless charging and the fact that they only sell the green version over here in Europe (I'd much prefer the black version with the faux leather finish) just makes it a deal breaker. I cannot justify spending $2020 on a phone with that many (basic!) compromises.

Seems that the US offers/promotions on this phone are far better than the European and UK offers. Seems like double standards to me. No wireless charging is a deal breaker for me anyway.

It seems like OnePlus has forgot its motto and the reason why people accepted it at first place... flagship killer features at lowest price.

Now all thy are trying to do is making money AMAP. So bye bye OnePlus.

Don't forget your root and . There are already plenty of other better expensive options.

Well the annoying thing is that oneplus flagships are usually much cheaper than competitors flagships so you have to wonder why did they enter the market so early if they can not compete on price!

justasmile, 29 Oct 2023'no proper water resistant (only splash resistant)... moreI'll accept this challenge.

                      Topic: Splash Resistance
"I mean, who would bring it underwater anyways? IPX4 is enough for normal accidental spills."
                      > in the Caribbean and S. America heavy thick raindrops are VERY common during rain fall, not the light rain you experience in North America typically. There are other areas across the globe that is similar. Why limit yolurself taking a foldable to the beach to hide it in a towel or to lounge 15 feet from the beach shoreline vs 2 ft? ;)
                      - the point is to not 'Half-Step' on water resistance, and simply be splash resistance. I mean they didn't on screen brightness or LTPO did they? Why did they stop there?! Hmm.

                      Software Experience:
regarding unoptimized software and bad multitasking experience;.
                      "It'll improve over time."
No it will not. Oppo promised as such on the Find N2 flip with larger software support on the outer screen, they did NOT deliver other than more animal emoji's. Look at either's press release and you can clearly see whom the overpaid clowns are that really should NOT have a duplicate role to Oppo within OnePlus.

                      'Desktop Mode:
                      "Sure, that's a disadvantage"
^ its a significant dis-advantage. At this price missing this software experience should be considered a missed opportunity at best, poor for-thought for this device category and its real target market.

                      Branding:
"That's something that would be forgotten very easily once you use it. Better than only having it in China."
^ Sorry Oppo has gone official AT announcement their going global. Many missed that because they were blinded by Oppo brand. Don't ever forget this entire product IS Oppo's not OnePlus. OnePlus' only participation is in marketing, co-branding -and- in sales, period. Look who's official launch presentation debut first? Oppo's Theirs looked a LOT more professional.

punch-hole screen debat is a mute point - not worth debating about. its small period.

                      Brand: Is everything.
"Again, something that would be forgotten easily. And even if you don't, you'll get used to it."
^ depending on past mishaps a brand makes or folly's of their CEO, a brand's value is VERY sensitive. Nothing gets forgotten so easily it takes years!!

                      Store Front presence:
"That doesn't make the phone bad."
^ no it doesn't you're correct. But it affects consumer confidence for warranty repairs and longevity of the brand to stand by their product. At least in North America and in Europe. Wiithout specifically and heavily addressing this, it'll be a problem behind the initial 1st Qtr of sales.

                      >> I don't know much about night shot quality, I'm not a shutter bug so I cannot debate. Its too subjective.

Design: Again too subjective but I like the design.
Dave2D's review shows this device to be really small as his hands are small like mine but every other reviewer it looks too big for comfort.

Design exterior: Again subjective to the person using it.
Personally, that camera module looks the best in the business and VERY similar to ZTE's Nubia Z50S Pro and as a reviewer stated acts like a support on the index finger for using it one-handed or for long in the hand use over time.

'Skin over OS: ColourOS: again too subjective and no experience. I'll pass on this.

Value of purchase: somewhat debatable and subjective based on someone's expense threshold.
"This is already quite a great phone for a start. It's a better buy than the Samsung Z fold 5."
^ Better buy is subjective, questions of value arise:
whom has a larger global sales network/support? Samsung.
whom has a larger global customer service support? Samsung.
whom has a larger consumer warranty support for help, product repairs, and software features for questions and help? Samsung.
Whom has larger trade-in discounts, offers, and longer offers throughout the product cycle? Samsung.
Whom has lower than launch pricing after the 1st quarter and how often?
                      Samsung.

^ the value debate on 'better buy' is irrefutable: its Samsung. So when you say 'better buy' on the questions I've asked as rebuttal and provided the truthful global answer its unquestionable.

                      Cheers.

It only costs less in USA.
Fold5 is 500€ less expensive in EU.

On the same note, the horizontally foldables are meant to people with money, to corporate employees, therefore the price is artificially kept high, although the device itself is not particularly much more complicated as a vertically foldables. It's all I said all along this topic - they're too expensive. And the Samsung Folds too, and so on.
The foldables are a new type of product, and every manufacturer hurry head first to speculate for profit.

YUKI93, 30 Oct 2023Horizontal foldables, in general, regardless of brand, are ... moreAgreed, I recently saw the Razr 40 ultra in store for 755€, flip foldables actually make sense now, but for the life of me can't understand the overpriced horizontal foldables. No phone should cross the 1500 mark now, even for luxury items

Horizontal foldables, in general, regardless of brand, are still too expensive despite being in the market since 2019 and still see no signs of being affordable. By contrast, we now see such a thing with vertical foldable flip phones, as they're nothing more than a standard slab smartphone that folds in half. I still remember the first foldable RAZR 2019 cost $1,500 when new. Now, the RAZR 40 2023 costs $699 new, and that's before counting in any discounts.

1200$ and not a penny more! Imho

Meanwhile, an iPhone 15 Pro Max with 512GB of storage is the same price in Europe. I'd take this 100 times out of 100 over the iPhone.

And what reviewers got were the early production units, some of them even had condensation build up under the camera glass and they all reported that those were the pre production units with issues...gonna have to wait for some long teem reviews I guess. Also in my opinion if a phone can handle 100 folds per day, every single day for a year, for 4 years straight, that is only 146.000 folds. There's no way will I fold it so many times lol and I don't plan on keeping my phone more than 3-4 years anyway

Once these evolve a bit further, maybe a year or two more... Then I'll go for a foldable. "Open" alone makes me want to upgrade from a recent OnePlus 11, but I think price-wise it's a bit too high for my taste.
