Wow $350 for 64GB? I will wait to buy it if the price is equivalent to the OLED Switch which costs only $250 new in Indonesia.

Anonymous, 09 Nov 2023How copying one of the most successful consoles in history ... moreTo be fair, they are successful because of their fanbase.
It's not because of the device itself.
The NSwitch is closer to the performance of the 2005 console Xbox 360, and really not at all comparable to the 2013 Xbox One. Let alone the PS4 Pro which was released around the same time. If it helps understand, think of the NSwitch as the "WiiU Pro".
Look at the PS Vita released in 2011, and it's performance is much faster than the 2002 Xbox, and actually closer to the 2006 PS3. That was an impressive device. But it wasn't successful because it wasn't adopted by fans, and was relatively abandoned by the OEM and Developers.
Similar story with the PSP, which was again in the middle of PS1 and PS2 in terms of capability. But it released during the PS2 era, so it was half a generation behind like it's successor. Meanwhile, Nintendo seldom had powerful handhelds. The NDS released during the PSP era, and it was much slower, it was closer to a N64 in terms of capability. The 3DS was even worse, as it wasn't even as fast as the GameCube that launched ages ago.
If you're looking for the most powerful handheld of all time (from a mainstream console maker), I think that title goes to the Sega Nomad. It played MegaDrive games when the Genesis was still around, and it's true successor (Sega Saturn) didn't arrive for a couple years. But no-one remembers the Sega Nomad. Which proves the point, the hardware isn't as important as people think it is. It is about the experience, the games, the price, the availablity, and lastly the marketing.
Without Tetris the original Game Boy wouldn't have been such a success.
Without Pokemon, the Gameboy Color and Advance also wouldn't have been a success.
Without Mario (various), the NDS wouldn't have been as successful.
Without Pokemon, the 3DS wouldn't have been as successful.
...so if anyone wants to emulate Nintendo, I mean truly copy them, they need to develop some compelling exclusives and market the heck out of it. Sony knows this, Microsoft only just realised, and I'm not sure where Valve stands on it.

Anonymous, 10 Nov 2023Burn in has not been an issue with OLED since the early 201... moregames usually have heads up display or HUD always on. so static images and stuff can cause burn in. what's the point of thousands of nits if feared by burn ins?

Anonymous, 10 Nov 2023Burn in has not been an issue with OLED since the early 201... moreI'm typing this comment in 2023 with a OnePlus that has noticeable burn-in. It's not as horrendous as some of my previous Samsung, but the problem still exists. Thats because nothing has been fixed at a fundamental level, these are diodes made from natural compounds that degrade over time.
Which is why Apple is on the forefront, and they're pumping Billions of dollars into R&D to develop synthetic-OLED (aka sLED, aka micro-LED) display technology. When it happens they will hold the trade secret and hoard all the stock. If you want BETTER than OLED screen AND without the downside of burn-in.... you'll either have to wait or go Apple.
I think it might be ironic if Samsung starts releasing their flagship phones, which have displays purchased from LG Display. But it's not like LG makes phones anymore, and probably won't be re-entering the market anyway.... so maybe it won't be too weird.
However, the Chinese OEMs will find themselves at the backfoot again. Unless another corporate espionage happens and the technology is stolen/copied, or they somehow find a way to get to the same product through a different technique. But that requires time, expertise, and Billions of dollars, things the Chinese OEMs aren't exactly well-known for.

you have to suffer, 10 Nov 2023i can imagine the burn in issueBurn in has not been an issue with OLED since the early 2010s. The technology has advanced significantly. The only way to get burn in would be if you sat your screen on max brightness for a long period of time. Cannot believe people still afraid of burn-in boogeyman in 2023.

Stop comparing the Steam Deck to the Nintendo Switch. The Nintendo Switch is a closed system with proprietary software and proprietary hardware. Comparing the Steam Deck to the Nintendo Switch makes as much sense as comparing the Steam Deck to the Gameboy Advance or Playstation Vita. The Steam Deck is comparable to the Aya Neo, the GPD Win, the Lenovo Legion, and ASUS Rog Ally. Enough.

Mills, 09 Nov 2023Can we all agree that Valve made this decision on their own... moreThey were probably just testing the market. The Deck is not like those portable products by Chinese companies that are sustained by Indiegogo fan fundings.

Actually it should be an exciting news because the low quality LCD screen is the main reason I skipped the original Steam Deck, although I kinda loved its super ergonomics, especially the track pads. On the other hand I wouldn't also buy something with a display resolution significantly lower than my 7 years old phone which has a 570 ppi screen which looks much better than any console ever made. I was recently looking forward to Lenovo Legion Go, but unfortunately it has no OLED screen, which is kinda no-go for me. I dunno, a number of handhelds are coming, but they all have some major flaws which makes buying them a compromise which I don't feel I'm willing to make.

Why do the buttons need to be so tiny and so close together ? Like they dont have space or something that they need to be packed in the top corners ?
For previous posts who complain about copy of switch.
I cant see it that way as Steam is collection of games platform and makes sense to have there own device to run all these games in there. Nintendo with switch dont have long history as a platform with games like Steam have for like 20 years

For those into Switch alternatives, I'd also recommend looking into the Ayn Odin 2. It's currently on sale for pre-order for $299. Only con is that it only runs Android (not Windows), but if you're into Android emulation then it might be perfect.

Anonymous, 09 Nov 2023How copying one of the most successful consoles in history ... moreTo me, it's not it's a bad idea. It's the fact that so many companies are trying to cash in on the same idea. I understand the G Cloud and Steam Deck are cloud gaming devices but the Lenovo Legion is just WORD for WORD copying.
Also, I seen a lot of people online bashing and disliking the Steam Deck as it seems like a Switch wanna-be cash grab
