Not that they wouldn't get the cutting edge chip if the price is right, but more often than not it isn't. Mid-range chips have their fans too.

Just buy a phone like the Xiaomi 13T or S23 FE its very capable for the next 5 years.

justasmile, 19 Nov 2023As I said in my previous comment, if you want your phone to... moreI disagree, tensor is the perfect.example of a chipset that Android is optimised for and will work for years to come. The Pixel 6 pro still runs perfectly well for everyday tasks. The fastest chipsets are becoming less and less relevant unless you want a phone that will last for more than 5 years.

Although I'm one of those that picks up older flagships, the poll doesn't tell the whole story. I never sought to buy a phone. It just happened that a good deal fell in my lap. A deal that would be stupid to pass up. So if there were no older flagships, I'd likely just hold onto my old phone a few more years, and then go with a midrange.

Using a 6 year old phone is totally doable today. In some ways I prefer my old phone to my new one. Headphone jack, 16:9 display that doesn't crop video frames, etc...

As I said in my previous comment, if you want your phone to last long, get the latest or ones with slightly worse performance. But not the oven tensor G3.

Sometimes, consumers have no choice because OEMs are releasing new phones with old cihpsets. SD695? That's from 2021. Dimensity 6020? That's Dimensity 700 from 2021. The new chipsets are pretty much just on the new pemium flaghips.

These new chipset every year is okay, but come on, we don't need any new os update every year too, even windows 10 last for 6yrs or more after released

Ellen Dale, 19 Nov 2023Some older ones are still relevant today and will be a few ... moreFor majority the SD695 is more than they ever need for next 5 years.
SD 778/782 are still very top of the middle class range phones and these are even good for gaming. Now SD865 is still better then all i mentioned and there is also SD870 that is basically a middle class chip from start and it the top end of the middle class chips.
Well there is 7+ gen 2 but you can find it only in 2 brands with 3 different model names so it's hard to judge where that chip belongs to. Basically budget flagship that is still better then top end of a middle class

99% of people don't need new ones. They call, text, take photos, browse, and play the occasional basic mobile game (NOT genshin or cod or smth). For those people, older chipset are fine. Only real world difference between old and new chips for them would be smth like efficiency. Though from the looks of it, qual comms new chip is going to have new AI features so that changes things.

                    Do flagship chipsets still matter?
Kind of. but an older chip is ok

GSMA - People prefer older chipsets.

It's just mind blowing how do you people come to this conclusion!
When part of the answer is that flagship chips matter and second part is that older are fine too. That voting answer needed to be written as "Kind of, but i prefer older chips" and then you can do this article with the title as people prefer older chipsets

Buy a reasonable phone and use it for years. It's not necessary to buy latest and greatest phone every year. Companies are making money and making us fool with hype.
I'm using Sony Xperia xz2 compact and fully satisfied.

Some older ones are still relevant today and will be a few more years down the line, given a good software support.
                        For a normal/average person (majority)
Even SD 865 will be more than enough to do day-to-day tasks without hiccups
