Not available for Fold 5 yet. No idea how good it will work. But it would be great to have this feature in Pro Video for less digital video shots in bright daylight.

AHE, 17 Nov 2023It's the illusion of choice. For the short-term, Xi... moreThe average consumer prioritises a sleek phone over poorly implemented and huge camera humps covering half the phone. That is why Samsung is growing and everybody else are shrinking on market shares. Use the technology instead of trying to cram a real camera into a pocket. When I want to take really good photos, I use a system camera. For everything else, a slim, foldable Flip5 is more than enough for me.

PhoneFreak45, 17 Nov 2023Greatttt, now not only do I have to listen to Samsung users... moreIt's the illusion of choice.
For the short-term, Xiaomi and Huawei are going about mobile photography the right way; larger sensors augmented by software.
Whereas Apple, Samsung and Google will continue to optimize images in software with minimal changes in hardware.
And why wouldn't they? The average consumer can't tell the difference.

Anonymous, 17 Nov 2023What is nd filter and what it does to image? It's like using sunglasses, but cameras can do a lot more with that.
Like to capture the moving water very smooth, lake like glass, dreamy clouds and ghostly town, since everything that's moving will be almost transparent.
Like a blur the moving background of subject that stay still in your picture.
I'm sure there are more ways, this is just an example.

Zendroid, 17 Nov 2023N9 couldn't match it. And we are talking Nokia, not hm... moreI own a n950, n900, n9, n8 and one that ruled the camera scene for a while, hrhr... from what i remember, the symbians werent in cahooch with HMD, but i could've been wrong, interesting to hear from people that actually knew what the old Nokia was capable of, it was too bad they didn't get to launch sailfish/or any other linux variant like harmattan or whatever prior to Android taking off. Oh well. :) I agree about the phone flash too. + Nowadays the best camera phones aren't even global, thanks to certain superpowers wanting to keep things out of the states and europe.

I'm sure you'd take a real camera over any Smartphone any day. Then you'd be able to adjust your aperture and use a variable ND filter too.

Greatttt, now not only do I have to listen to Samsung users telling me that their phone has variable aperture when it obviously doesn't, but I also have to listen to them telling me that it has variable ND filters when it obviously doesn't. This is ridiculous. This is going to be so annoying. I feel like Samsung did this just so that their users would start spreading lies about their phones.

And tbh, xenon flash does it better than whatever led flash we have today. Led should be used as af help, with xenon as the actual flash. But sadly all flagships keep led as flash. My N8-00 had to be updated through a place in Germany to get the firmware.

Zendroid, 17 Nov 2023I'm tempted every salary day, to buy N8-00 and 808 again. Be careful, because you might not like the outcome.
As a former owner of Nokias N8, I can tell you that today's cameraphones are vastly superior in low light and dynamic range - two major fields, where differences in image quality between phone cameras and traditional DSLR cameras were most obvious.
At its time - 2010/2011 the N8 was the pinnacle of smartphone photography, it was a paradigm changer with its first lossless 3x zoom capability, 12 MP Bayer sensor at a size of 1/1.7" - a size that was reserved for dedicated compact cameras at that time. Oh, and it did have quite a nice llittle Xenon flash!
Actually, I was able to take stunning photos with the N8 - in bright sunlight. Colors and contrast were slightly muted but that allowed for much better post-processing/color grading.
Today's computational photography with image stacking and night modes and what not let's you take usable images even in almost pitch dark environments.
Moreover, the N8 sensor or lens were not stabilized - this technology came a few years later with the Nokia Lumia phones.

Since this is just a software update, there is no way this is a true electronic variable ND filter that would actually reduce the amount of light hitting the sensor.
The only way I can speculate this works is that the software update somehow enables to artificially lower the ISO, which would reduce the sensitivity of the photosites but might also potentially negatively affect dynamic range.

Zendroid, 17 Nov 2023I'm tempted every salary day, to buy N8-00 and 808 again. What about N9 with N8 camera design just a bit slimmer with more screen to body ratio.
Let's hope someone copy their design and brings a modern device in that form factor.
