My Galaxy S22+ was doing this upscaling at 10x zoom and higher, that's why I was stopping at 9x or 9.9x zoom.
But yeah the Nothing has no telephoto lens so it starts doing it very early, even at 2x zoom.

This is why I want a real telephoto lens, my S22+ looked great at 9x zoom, never really used 30x except for the moon, I'm not planning to use 100 or 120x.

Good phone all around. Realme is really hyping this phone in the camera game. 8MP ultrawide doesn't seem like that big of a dealbreaker anymore. It's just a (moderate) caveat now but nothing to fuss over.
