Weekly poll results: 8-12GB of RAM is the sweet spot for current smartphones

10 December 2023
Nearly half of voters would buy a phone with 8GB, around a third want more - 12GB. But few feel the need for more (and few are okay with less).

i saw 12 Gb RAM is heavily needed for Super HD games. Especially if the game summon 3 bosses at the same time, my phone display peaked with numbers and movements, then FPS drop happened.

Everybody wants 8-12Gb ram but they use their phones for calls and messages, lol.
I have 4Gb in my iPhone and everything works perfectly. I don't keep apps running in background, always open 1 app at a time, no gaming, no heavy usage, no multitasking. Everything is smooth, lag free and opens instantly.
If I need heavy usage or work I go to my Dell Latitude laptop (with 32Gb ram), if I want gaming I go to my PlayStation.
Why would I want a powerful device with 12Gb ram in my pocket, but with 6-7" display? For mobile gaming? Lol, that's not gaming. For productivity work? Lol, what productivity can you do with 6-7" display?

you put together 4 and 6GB options, so people who tink 4GB is not enough, but 6GB is enough can't vote for 6GB

Wantedly made options to omit 6gb. Why do we need 8gb for normal users for long run

8GB is when you want a reasonably fast phone at the entry-level price.
12GB is when you want premium performance.
16GB+ is when you want to get the absolute best for future-proofing (and have extra cash to burn).

Windows is releasing a Europe version basically you can remove all bloatware included, for 2024 in Europe it's not allow bundle software that users can't remove and need to meet the regulated standards apple and Android stores can be removed

I just bought the OnePlus 10T 16GB/256GB for just 400 EUR. This should give enough headroom for power- and memory-hungry apps for the next 3-4 years.

Sorry, GSMARENA published my post now after maybe 10 hours of reviewing.

AutoFocus, 11 Dec 2023Since you are not a gamer, an 8GB RAM phone of today, will ... moreI responded to a comment early this morning, but GSMARENA chose to review it first. So they didn't publish it yet. This delayed reviewing process disrupt the logical and natural chain of reaction. It's happening in other threads as well. The funny thing is that trolls can easily and with no restriction, post unlimited comments, whereas a registered subscriber like me get blocked regularly.

Anyway, investment doesn't necessarily need to be in money. I invest in good and enjoyable experience while using my smooth phone with abundant RAM. I never said I will be able to use a new phone for 5 years, for the same reasons you yourself expressed. Platforms get obsolete after 2 - 4 years. My Poco F3 has 6 GB RAM. It's the best phone I ever owned, but the battery is dieing now after almost 3 years. Since I'm not a gamer, I can easily survive on a cheap midranger with only 6 GB for the next 2 years.

I bet, 12-16GB of RAM should be the sweet spot for Android tablets & iPads. Imagine the multitasking & multi-gaming capabities in one wide big screen of tablets, almost comparable to laptops & desktop computers for sure! I can do most of my computer jobs all at the same time with ease & high efficiency. Never will i have no time to do something else when everything is already in front of me, doing all the jobs at once!👍💪🤯

After 5 years, battery needing replacement will be an eventuality, especially if your usage involves lots of video streaming, calling, GPS etc. Even if your phone outlasts 5 years, as you equates amount of RAM with phone longevity, its camera, display, storage, cellular (6G support ?), WiFi capabilities all become obsolete by then and you feel burdened by your old expensive investment.

I call if a phone can last for 5 years, it is a worthy investment. 16GB RAM and above phones, still costs too much value wise.

hmm, 10 Dec 2023For what reason 2023 iphone dont count as a flagship phone ... moreI wrote except iPhone because I was talking about android flagships. And by having a SD gen2 with 6GB of RAM, it will just bottleneck its capabilities. By the way, iPhones are flagship devices, but only the Pros, not the 'cheaper' ones. [because of less powerful chipset and cameras, No 'Pro' features(Like console emulated games, better optimization and LiDAR), 60Hz display(Why in 2023), less premium build (aluminium compared to titanium), slower USB 2.0 rather than 3.2 (the difference is noticeable) and less RAM (6GB compared to 8GB)]. The omission of these features make it a sort of lower-end iPhone and not fit to count as flagships. And it's weird seeing someone compare stones with RAM (I don't know why would anyone do that). I don't understand half of your comment. TBH I don't think you understood what I replied in that comment.

S, 11 Dec 2023When you purchased your last phone and when you will replac... moreI bought my last phone maybe half a year ago. Xiaomi Poco F5 12/256 EU model. I don't replace my relatively potent midrangers. When the battery eventually die, I destroy them.

I cycle through my 3 phones on regular bases. Now preparing to buy a fourth phone, because the battery in my first phone (Poco F3) is unfortunately dieing.

I live in a country where you can't survive without a phone with internet connection. We don't have physical banks anymore, you can't even enter a public toilet without some electronic unit with internet connection. Not having a phone is worse than sitting in a jail, because in a jail you get 3 meals per day, but without a phone, you can't even buy food from supermarkets and many restaurants, they're namely reluctant to accept cash. That's why I own 3 fully functional and operational phones at every given time. Every phone is backed up by 2 others in case I lose control over one of them.

"Investment" is a broad term. I invest in my phones out of necessity, not joy! I refuse to buy e-waste only to save a hundred Euro. If your phone is short on RAM, the CPU/GPU will wear off the memory, because HUGE amounts of data have to be shoveled around constantly in microseconds. Apps will be pushed around constantly, which is not only damaging the RAM and memory, but also very irritating.

If anyone calls phone as an investment vehicle, they don't know what is investment.
If any device or tool purchased not for productive purposes then it can't be called as investment, no matter how hard those marketing stunts promote about better investment.
