The cover screen on the Z Fold6 will likely be wider.

Technologist, 09 Dec 2023It will not be interesting if it doesn’t have built in slot... moreI mean the logical thing is to put the s pen in if they give it a better aspect ratio, it surely isnt difficult, but then again, samsung has been so slow in changing this form factor it may take a few more years for S pen to be built in

its a shame it has taken 6 generations for Samsung to listen to its user base, most people including myself hate that ultra narrow aspect ratio, its ugly and outdated, and the competition have produced stunning foldables that now make the fold line look amateurish.
I refused to buy one until they changed this, and it took so long, that now I just prefer the competitions offerings. they are superior in most ways.

It will not be interesting if it doesn’t have built in slot for S-Pen.

Finally, 09 Dec 2023Finally and it took Oneplus Open and Google Fold to come on... moreTrue..it is competition that is making samsung do this. Now we need competition for the S series and iphones. Other wise we will get the punch-hole and notch respectively, for another five years.

Finally and it took Oneplus Open and Google Fold to come on to the market and dwindling ZF5 sales, before Samsung would change their tall skinny aspect ratio that 80% of the buyers complained about, been waiting for 3 years for a wider cover screen and gave up and bought S23U! Samsung have been sitting on their laurels for way too long doing next to nothing and their ZF5 sales tanked to way below ZF4 or ZF3 as proven fact that.
If Samsung wants the success of ZF6 then they better listen to what the Majroity wants!

Biggest complaints for the majority as a matter of fact that needed change are:
            1. Wider front screen at least 6.4"
            2. Bigger Battery as early indication is Snapdragon 8 Gen3 is even more power hungry than Gen2
            3. Better Camera lens
            4. S-pen Silo

A bigger battery and silo for S-at most may cost 10-20 grams; but is not going to kill anyone but a smaller battery will definitely kill your sales as power users like me refuse to buy one; I won't buy one if it will not last a whole day comfortably (at least same SOT as the S23 Ultra), nobody wants to carry the Fold6 + Powerbank!

I don't want anything near the size of the Vivo or Xiaomi. I hope it will be no wider than the Open. If they can come in slightly under the size of the Open, that would be even better.

I'm not sure people understand what competition is? If BK, McD's and Wendy's are all making steak fries with the same seasoning, that isn't competition. It's the same thing under a different brand.

The lack of publicity, total lack marketing, and the very high price makes the phones sell under par.

JLC, 08 Dec 2023The hinge is very important. The O+O’s hinge which snaps in... moreThank you for correcting me on the screens, by the way. I didn't realise the peak brightness was so much higher than the maximum stable brightness. Also, yes, the hinge is definitely a big problem, which reminds me of the bad Google Pixel Fold. I love Google Pixels, but the Fold is at best uninspired, drab and boring, and at worst has lots of hardware issues and bad design decisions, including the hinge that can't bend to 180° fully (covers only 178°); the extremely large bezels on the cover screen and the still relatively large bezels on the outer screen; the inefficient screens with unsatisfactory brightness levels; the meh cameras; the uncomfortable width paired with a very short height in proportion to it; and the overheating and modem connection issues that come with every other Pixel.

Now, the hinge on the OnePlus Open is bad, but at least it's so much better at everything else than that Google Pixel Fold. Where I will agree with you is the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold5's software, which is still vastly superior to OnePlus'. After all, OxygenOS has been awful since Oppo bought them, and I wasn't exactly a fan to begin with before then either, so how or why would they improve now all of a sudden. Samsung's hardware isn't bad by any means, as it's basically a carbon copy of the S23 and S23+'s cameras, but OnePlus has larger sensor for basically everything across the board, and minus night time for the periscope (software oversight I guess), at least their camera software is very competitive. The ultrawide probably shows the biggest difference compared to Samsung's, but everything to do with the cameras is much better hardware-wise, and if Samsung wins at all, it's probably only in edge cases due to slightly better software.

WIDER aspect ratio...THANK YOU! Sick of these skinny phones. Best one I had was the Huawei Mate2.
But you can't use it with one hand!
So? And if you can't use it with one hand, you are more likely NOT to try to text and drive!

I can guarantee you that the specific software features for foldables are in case of ZF5 in a league of its own, and they make the use of it a joy. Every single aspect is well thought out. The competition will try to catch up by copying them one by one, but it will take time.

Darth Caesium, 08 Dec 2023How about the fact that most people don't care about D... moreThe hinge is very important. The O+O’s hinge which snaps in and out has been tested for one million folds, but nobody talks about the way it has been tested: the machines which tested it just open and close it like the ZF5’s hinge. But the hinge snaps each time a human uses it. This hinge will never make it to 200000 folds, let alone the screen which is exposed to more pressure each time the screen snaps out.

The Flex Mode is almost missing on O+O: just the camera app (a copy of ZF5 camera software), and the YouTube. That’s it, vs. comprehensive support on ZF5. The O+O’s hinge which snaps in and out automatically is a no go for Flex Mode anyway.

The ZF5 is the more pocketable device which is very important for a foldable tablet.

Now let us look at what you wrote.

“Also, the OnePlus Open's screens are brighter than Samsung's, have better colour contrast and accuracy, are of a higher resolution”
According to GSMA, both have the same brightness in auto-mode (ZF5 a bit higher on the inner screen, O+O a bit higher on the cover screen), in manual mode ZF5 is 25% brighter. If you think the max HDR brightness for a few seconds is relevant, go for it.
In case of “colour accuracy” it is quite the opposite:
                            Cover screen of ZF5: sRGB 100%, DCI-P3 99,83%, Cover screen of O+O: sRGB 96,48%, DCI-P3 72,16%
                            Main screen of ZF5: sRGB 100%, DCI-P3 99,32%, Cover screen of O+O: sRGB 96,48%, DCI-P3 72,16%
Higher resolution of O+O is correct, but your eyes won’t see the difference.

“have slimmer bezels and are better-sized, with better aspect ratios”
O+O has slimmer bezels on the cover screen, but the ZF5 has slimmer bezels on the main screen which is more important.
Regarding the better aspect ratio you are completely wrong: the main screen is the important one in case of a book-style foldable and in this case ZF5’s tablet-like aspect ratio wins hands down against the squarish screen of O+O. After all it is a foldable tablet and not a foldable slab phone like Flip5.

“After all, the most important thing about foldables *ARE* the screens.”
You are right and the ZF5 is much better in this area (don’t forget the distracting punch hole on the main screen in O+O).

“How about the fact that most people don't care about DEX mode anyway?”
From the posters list you just pick one that you say most people don’t use and don’t mention all the rest. A very selective way to answer. Btw., I use it often and would not to miss it ever. But the sum of all missing features in O+O makes the difference.

“Also, the cameras are undoubtedly better”
I challenge this. In some areas the ZF5 wins, in some areas O+O. I am not talking about the hardware.

“there is stylus support on both screens”
O+O does not offer it officially which means if you tried to write on it, you would be responsible for any damages. ZF5 even does not need a retractable stylus anymore because the UTG is stronger in the meantime. And stylus support on O+O is not equal to the stylus support in ZF5. I am not going to explain the differences here.

When you'r... moreAgreed, though until another foldable comes along that is just as good or even better in all of the OnePlus Open's areas while beating it through an IP rating, better software and wireless charging, I will still argue that OnePlus/Oppo has the best foldable. Foldables do seem to be rapidly advancing since this year, so I wonder whether it will even take lots of time for a competitor to beat the OnePlus Open. Also, keep in mind that I value cameras on a phone more than most people do, so I'm extremely pleased by the OnePlus Open's set up, as it seems to be much better than any other foldable, and much better than most regular bar phones even.

When you're first introduced to it, it seems like a really good device for its price, but as you dig deeper, you will notice that its missing several things a $1700 smartphone should have, like wireless charging or a decent IP rating
and I get that not everyone uses them, but for $1,700 there is absolutely no excuse for these features to be missing
