If Canalys based their research on shipments then they are misleading. Phones are not 'shipped' into Africa via official channels. There are many runners who buy official products from China, Dubai and US (refurbs) for resell in Africa. Some are actually branded US mobile operators, some UK and some South Korea. Traffic to google and apple servers provides a better indication of smart phone usage in Africa. I am typing this from a Sprint Galaxy S device but I am in Harare.

DarlingYext, 19 Dec 2023It's not just about how much money is one willing to, ... moreYou can have your preference. Doesn't change general market trends. Look at Apple at how outrageously their prices are in many countries, yet they are highly desirable brand. Clear that's what Samsung is going in Africa as well, focusing on their flagships instead of racing in the thin margin low end. Transsion canbhave the cheap stuff, but in general, once people have more money, they move up. Even Xiaomi realizes this and thus they are moving more towards the premium.

For me Samsung is just not giving what I want, so I did in fact go for Transsion, not just ones, but 5 times. The prices of 3 out of those devices combined would've been enough for me to get the newest Z Fold instead, I just didn't and still don't want a Samsung.

Why are they promoting the Redmi 12C when it is pretty trash and a downgrade from the Redmi 10C. It's more like a Redmi 10A successor.

Africa has more than 1 billion people but smartphone market is so low everytime they report it's because majority of people buy from shop who import phones from China, Dubai etc very few people buy phones from official chanell. Trust me there are lot of people here who use Iphone, Samsung, Xiaomi, Oppo etc who will never appear in these reports.

No need for an "analyst." A developing market will always have growth no matter what. That's why they call it developing market. High young population growth means there will always be new consumers buying their first smartphones. It doesn't take a genius to conclude this.

Transsion strategy is simple. Flood the market with cheap devices. It works in the short term for growth, but not sustainable. The other Chinese OEMs like Xiaomi did the same and now they're facing challenges. Guess what, now they start focussing on upper mid range and longer software updates. Those are where you will make money, something that Samsung knows very well. That's also why Samsung is not too concerned with the low margin cheap segment. They're focusing on branding and foldables, something people aspire to own. When those young people start to have more money, they won't keep buying Transsion brands. That's where the likes of Samsung comes in, and gain a good fat profit.

Market share is not everything. Margins is also important for sustainability of the business. At the highest extreme, there's Apple. Low market share around the world, but gather the most profit amongst all smartphone makers combined.
