Weekly poll: can the Asus ROG Phone 8 find a place in your pocket?

14 January 2024
The gaming phone has been reformed to be better for casual users. It's still a powerful gaming phone and now has features like an LTPO display.

If I wanted to spend this much on a phone then I would get Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra. No way I am buying Asus Rog 8 pro phone for this price point. They are out of their minds to think many will spend so much for this!

Redmagic has high battery life for video test, but its not confirmed that its because of software tuning or because of the dsp.

1989 nothinghappened, 19 Jan 2024I thought i already told you i wont get notified unless you... more- The RedCore processor consumes much more power, being simply a dedicated multitask and multithread processor. (i.e., multiple ALUs dedicated to the different tasks assigned).

      - The overall consumption refers to operating system management, motherboard management, display management, Qualcomm SOC management, etc.

Finally, for further efficiency, one can act via software to change some parameters.

Actually at the moment you only have to read the reviews of gsmarena and other industry magazines to realize this. (Because they are default tests of 'daily use).

There is no other third-generation SnapDragon device, at the time of writing this reflection, that is capable of doing as much or better than the ZTE.

It is one of the most technologically advanced devices in the industry.

      Regards.

So redmagic has tested their custom dsp and claimed 30% efficiency increase over the qualcomm dsp? Did you just believe it like that? Or did you do your own tests? How?

It seems to me that you are the same user who expressed a contrary opinion in the Asus reviews section.

The contrary opinion concerns precisely the general ugliness of the device (old, tacky and spoiled brat design), and the field test.

Furthermore, you actually suggest the RedMagic 9 Pro.

It is a judgment that I would like to support.

As regards the efficiency of the SOC (or multi-DSP) Red(Core)2R, obviously, it will consume significantly more than a simple DSP, but when tested by facts, you have 6500 reasons available on the battery side and a software synergy that helps in global consumption for at least 30% less.

However, if you decide to buy it, I can recommend the Sleet version (12/256GB global), it has an even more minimalist and beautiful line, especially on the back of the device.

If you love the ZTE Z60 sibling lineup, you'll love this one too.

In this case you will have an extra gear for gaming, retrogaming and your favorite music (both in speakers and headphones)

          Greetings.

lower the price or include micro sd card support.

The phone seems marvelous, but the alternative (other than ZTE) aren't A Gaming phone, Which is perfect for people who don't want to look like a Spoiled Brat And Want A Minimalist design. Perfect for Milleniums.

And if nubias propietary dsp is more like an soc it would just be using even more power. The hexagon dsp is said to be in between a fixed function hardware and a cpu, to save on power. Can you turn that chip on your redamagic off? Would be great if you can do a power usage comparison with it on vs off.

Anonymous, 15 Jan 2024Where is the option "ASUS - never again" ???https://github.com/waau/qualcomm-nnlib/tree/master/hexagon

The Hexagon DOES NOT HAVE ANY CPU properties, it is simply a CPU module, without CPU, it would not make sense to work, because it is not a CPU.

Nubia's proprietary technology, on the contrary, is to all intents and purposes a SOC with its own CPU. (in fact, it is not limited to the audio part only)

I don't want to convince anyone, but no one has to convince me.

Proof in the field comes from experience and not from the printed company marketing sign.

In fact, the statement you mentioned is used by many companies with an eye for "imagination".

Veritates, 17 Jan 2024"qualcomm dsp not being a 'real' dsp?" ... moreAnd the source for this? And the source for the redmagics dsp not doing this? I mean this is the first sentence of the article i linked.

"Qualcomm Technologies developed the Hexagon Digital Signal Processor (DSP) as a world class processor with both CPU and DSP functionality to support deeply embedded processing needs of the mobile platform for both multimedia and modem functions"

"qualcomm dsp not being a 'real' dsp?"

I'm not saying it's not real, I'm saying that the DSP processes the data (in vectors), but the CPU processes it.

The DSP is not a CPU.

The asus phone has to do more to compete. the Samsung S has now all are 3 camera lens equipped at back. those 2-lens models are all considered lower end models. applied to both samsung and apple models.

Pubg is a shooter battle royale which requires some skill to play at a professional level on a touch screen. People use 4 fingers or more simultaneously on the touchscreen to get an advantage, called the 'claw'. If one is experienced in this, yuzu with touchscreen would be real easy, but might damage your fingers anyway. I just dont find playing botw on yuzu with a touchscreen for over an hour comfortable.

If yuzu compatibility gets as good as dolphin there would be no need to carry a switch.

                                - the Xbox controller uses two classic AAA styluses with 40 hours of battery life.

There are also rechargeable AAA Panasonic (Eneloop) ones.

The black ones, with more mAh but fewer charge-discharge cycles (500) and the white ones with less mAh but more charge-discharge cycles (2100)

As for the classic AAA ones from supermarkets, I recommend the Energizer and the Varta. (they cost much less and I offer a lot, compared to more "famous" brands)

It is not a real ASP (Audio Signal Processor) and loads the CPU anyway.

The proprietary DSP called REd Core R2 Pro (which I presume is an evolution of the DSP mounted on the RedMagic 8 Pro), is actually a real processor (hence, the co-processor nomenclature) which also takes care of the audio, as well as RGB, capacitive keys, touch screen and VGA (as regards the video signal and frame interpolation)

Let's not forget that Qualcomm audio technology is nothing more than Codecs.

The same Codecs as a Realtek, which we find on the motherboards of many motherboard manufacturers. (including the Asus that I mount in my personal PC on 13700k and 4070-OC)

Therefore, a co-processor that uses Qualcomm codec and with 32Bit output resolution. (while in the "classic" Qualcomm SOC, the maximum supported audio resolution is 24Bit)

No, it does not increase the cycles, it decreases them, as it is the co-processor itself that processes the audio signals and then transfers them to the CPU.

In the case of the Qualcomm DSP, the processor also takes care of the audio (because it must process the audio signal), as there is no co-processor designated for the audio signal.

Finally, what we're talking about here, drivers, are actually the Vulkan API.

Based on the knowledge of the hardware and software (the driver underlying the VGA) and based on the type of code (whether closed or open), the Vulkan API can be developed in full compatibility.

In the case of Adreno (anagram of Radeon), this is easier.

In the case of Mali; No.

As for the emulator policy specifically (Yuzu and Eggns), I personally love Open-Source.

I have never liked Eggns (as well as a DamonPS2), as it is only and exclusively; Aggressive Profit.

                                  In the end;

                                  - I've always played on touchscreen (a pubg or whatever the hell it's called, I've never played it, I'm not interested in these little playstore games for casual kids) from a DOSBox up to Yuzu (in order of complexity of the emulators on the Android platform)

I originally purchased the controller for PC, then I later discovered that it was also compatible with tablet and smartphone devices. (in hardware)

Finally, the developers of the emulation scene programs themselves have also extended compatibility at the software level.

Greetings from the class of 77'.

Truth, 15 Jan 2024Yuzu, unlike Eggs, can use touch screen, but you're ri... moreI know yuzu can use touch. Eggns can use touch too if you pay for it. The point of the controller is comfort, unlike mobile games switch games are hard with a touch screen, maybe you're a pro claw pubg player and dont mind touch but i bet most do if you really want a great experience.

I know about the driver developemnts too, but they are still not ready to guarantee 100% switch compatibility. If you want a specific game that wont work, you are forced to carry your switch.

And how does this custom dsp reduce cpu load? Soc load could be reduced since the qualcomm dsp can stay idle. I assume the cpu load to increase since tbe qualcomm cpu has to communicate with a custom dsp rather than its own dsp.
