16 January 2024
It could be re-enabled if Apple reaches an agreement with Masimo over patent infringing.

I am wondering if they are allowed to do that, since they sold the watch with those features advertised. Removing them after the sale is typically not legal in the US. Removing the features before selling is perfectly fine, however. You'll then know what you're buying.

(turns off auto update on my Ultra 2)

Estiemax, 16 Jan 2024That's downright foul for an 800 bucks smartwatch It’s a downright foul from a number of different perspectives. Apple really messed up on this.

One possible silver lining though, there is now one less feature sapping power out of that already thinly spread battery life…….

I still can't entirely tell if they will be actively attempting to disable these features on watches already sold of only for newly sold watches?

I can't see them being legally allowed to disable the feature after the sale of the watch, simply because they would have a huge class action lawsuit on their hands with false advertising. Even if it was not legal to have the feature (it's all about consumer protection).

justasmile, 16 Jan 2024And still sell for the same price, huh? Not even a $10 discount?they know people will still buy them anyway, for that shiny bitten-fruit logo

justasmile, 16 Jan 2024And still sell for the same price, huh? Not even a $10 discount? Can you imagine Apple selling current-gen products at a discount? Even on Black Friday they only give you a gift card so you can be a good cult member and buy more Apple products.

"..started shipping the Watch Series 9 and Ultra 2 with SpO2 disabled to the retailers but has asked them not to open or sell the watches. "

Oof, that's shady, to be fair, this entire situation is.
