Some customers are getting wiser and just buy a second hand phone of the same model. Or add a few bucks for an even better model. Both of which are cheaper than getting their current phone repaired. All because of limited or non existent spare parts by year 3.

Also the price is dependable where you live. Here in EU and in Slovakia is everything very expensive compared to salary. Among all 30 EU countries when comes to Salary Slovakia is 28 or 29 lowest but prices are like top or second among EU countries.

Updates can improve performance on the software side like HyperOS being lighter than MIUI. Refreshing the hardware is as easy as replacing the battery. I also replaced the power button because I messed up and it stopped working. The repair for a new battery and power button can't buy me a new or used phone better than what I currently have. I do my own repairs.
Getting your phone bricked is rare, and it happens more often to people messing around with modding their phone and it's recoverable most of the time. The motherboard dying is even rarer, I've done it on the Xperia Z2 because I kept using it while it's charging and those phones get hot. Modern phones have better charging and better cooling. No modern phone gets hotter than an old Sony with a Snapdragon chip, with an expanded battery from all the charging while gaming.
Basically, if you take care of your phone the best thing to have is free software updates.

meizu 21pro should blend in together into a piece of art

If your phone dies or gets bricked in 3 years will not matter whether you got 7 or 10 years updates you have to pay expensive repair.
And honestly at that time new phone will be cheaper option than paying expensive repair.

Most people buys on carrier contract plan which means you paying your phone in a 2 maybe 3 years montly period and when its paid you get a new phone and sell the old one.
Noone will keep his phone for 5 or 10 years because all its value will be gone.
And even more popular brands dont gives you more than 1 year of warranty non EU countries and 2 years for EU countries.
So as long as your phone have only 2 years of warranty 2 updates are more than fine.
Lastly not many people carry in pockets 1000+ bucks for a new phone.
Just to my honest opinion.
