You're right.
The S23 has dimensions of 78.34cm2, whereas the S10e has 78.41cm2. Making the S22 about 1% smaller. That's according to the official specs. I think in real life, it's slightly different because these are not perfect cubes. I would say the S10e is still a bit smaller (1%) in terms of volume. But it's negligible.

Especially if you look at the S24, which is roughly same size BUT comes with notably larger camera sensors. On top of this, it also has a bigger battery. At the extremes we're talking 3100mAh versus 4000mAh, or about an increase of +29%.

But all of that is a bit moot. We possibly didn't have the design back then to make the device as compact. For instance, Apple uses 3D-Stacking in it's motherboard. It helps keep the iPhone Mini that small, and gives them extra space for their other devices. The downside is concentration of heat, which Apple has not yet began to tackle. Perhaps they will take a page out of Sony, and use the Heat Dissipation we saw on the Xperia Pro-I. Or at least have something like the flagship OnePlus for Passive Cooling.

All in all, you're right. They could've shrunk the battery to 3,000mAh and squeeze the internals a bit, and manage to put that small x2 Telephoto Camera inside. At least with the technology of its day and some effort. It's not particularly useful or even good quality, so I don't think it was a big loss. I think having the Ultrawide was a good choice. Otherwise they could've squeezed everything together, removed the Ultrawide, and fitted-in a good quality Telephoto with at least x3 maybe x4 Zoom properties. But then that could be said about the whole S10 lineup. Just remember these were just: small evolutionary camera improvements since the S7 camera, which had a big revolutionary improvement from the S6/Note4. The next big revolutionary improvement came from the S22 which had a notably much larger camera sensor than S21, S20, and obviously the S10.

Kangal, 09 Feb 2024Well the S10e is the size of the Samsung S4, looks absolute... moreS22 is merely 4mm more in height and it has 3x optical lens, so S10e could have it as well.

AlienKiss, 10 Feb 2024If it would of had the SD card it would have been almost pe... moreYeah, but it's still great. Nothing is perfect anyways.

justasmile, 08 Feb 2024Seems like the S24+ can be the true successor to S20+.If it would of had the SD card it would have been almost perfect ! 😊

I can read everything and get OnePlus 12 512gb for less than 128gb of S24

veloce, 09 Feb 2024S10e unfortunately lacked telephoto of the bigger variants,... moreWell the S10e is the size of the Samsung S4, looks absolutely tiny next to the S10+.

So yeah, makes sense, there's not enough space in there for a triple camera. They made do with the double module. Besides, the Ultrawide Camera was pretty good quality but the Telephoto wasn't good. Far less useful. It's not like the ones we have today that are proper x4-ish zoom, or the ones with telescopic x10+ zoom. The iPhone 13 Mini which got discontinued also had similar setup to the Samsung S10e camera.

For other small phones, look at the Sony XZ1c and iPhone SE (2016).

Kangal, 08 Feb 2024Samsung basically "jumped the shark" in Early 201... moreS10e unfortunately lacked telephoto of the bigger variants, otherwise it would be perfect.

I don't get the LTPO benefit in refresh rate, looks to be identical as on s23, why in AOD mode there is 24Hz not 1Hz?

s24 is a best in class for android. no one else can make a compact flagship with proper specs. it's only competitor is iphone15pro. if I would go for a large flagship, s23ultra would be more attractive compared to s24+. most AI features will arrive to s23 series in a few months with oneui6.1 update. so, s23+ and s24+ will be the same phones.

Samsung basically "jumped the shark" in Early 2019.
They had a Small (S10e), Medium (S10), and Large (S10+) offering. I really like it when companies do this!

Each competent device with nothing to separate them besides size (physical, screen, battery). And for its time it had one of the best cameras, best screen, highest battery size, best software, best processor (QSD 855, not the trash Exynos 9820). They were not perfect, for starters they were flagship priced, they had curved glass on front and back, very slippery, kinda ugly, easy to break, and both hard and expensive to repair.

Despite that, we can look at those 3 phones fondly. The next phones were utter waste. The S10-5G and Note20 and Ultra. First of all, they all were priced even higher. They updated DeX to rid of Developer Mode so you no longer had access to a Native Linux Distro on your phone (powerful feature). And lastly they removed the Headphone Jack. Since then, Samsung has very closely copied Apple in pricing, feature removal, and advertising budget. If you wanted to undo those and keep the S-Pen, you would have to make do with the Samsung Note 9. Which was a great phone, but it didn't have the camera prowess and processor as the S10 lineup.

PS: the Small, Medium, Large was done also by Sony with the Sony Z5c, Sony Z5, and Sony Z5P. Then again with the Xperia XZ1c, XZ1, XZP. Samsung previously sort of did a S-M-L with the likes of the S2, S3, Note2 back in 2012, but that is not a perfect example.
And even Apple has done it with the iPhone 5S, 6, 6+. Then again with the iPhone SE, 6S, 6S+. Then the iPhone 12 Mini, 12 Pro, 12 Max. And last time with iPhone 13 Mini, 13 Pro, 13 Max. All other OEMs don't do multiple sizes, and if they do, they differentiate the devices further with extra features, different camera modules, and even software differences.

Seems like the S24+ can be the true successor to S20+.

8mm all the way to 8.5mm still acceptable to include more battery cells. I hope Samsung consider this on next S* series.

At least for me, I dont care for few mm thickness and grams heavier if the battery life last longer especially on base variant, its already small few mm / g wont hurt my pocket.

Basically the S24 and S24+ maintains the same size as the S10 and S10+ respectively.

The 3D comparison at the start directs you to the iPhone 15 Pro vs 14 Pro, not the S24 vs S24+.

I've had my S24+ for about a week now and I gotta say it's an absolute beast of a device. I was gonna get the Ultra but really didn't need the Spen so it's amazing we now have the QHD display on its sibling too!! I urge people not to believe the lies and slander saying that Exynos is terrible. I've has great performance and battery life with it.

Have s23 Ultra 12gb 1tb. no way on this earth would I get the 24 series. Just the same phone apart with software playing around with the same hardware, given that the hardware has a different name "gen 3 instead of 2". The phones performance is so miniscule if any. I'll wait for hardware performance upgrade, not at all interested in AI... it's a gimmick. If I want to communicate in another language I'll learn it. I don't wish AI to diminish my IQ
