Correction: the main cam has a focal length of 27 or 28 mm (not 23 like the rest)
That makes the x2.5 telephoto the same length as the x3 on other phones, that is 70 mm
Note: the best 2024 cam so far is the Vivo X100 Pro and its phenomenal tele

Of course you won't get a great photo in comparison to if it was shooting with no motion but you do get a way better photo than a comparable photo by manually adjusting the shutter speed to a similar level as you get with the action mode/motion tracking focus switched on. Also in manual mode the shutter lag is way more pronounced so it doesn't work well for motion in any case as it is harder to capture the actual moment. For me anyway, I find this kind of mode very useful. I don't have an Honor phone but tried it in a few shopping malls on the Magic 6 pro and it seemed to work very well at least in this situation where the phone would have enough light to shoot with a 1/100s shutter speed without the sports mode

This doesn't make any sense, what matters here is the diameter of the entrance pupil of the lens, not the sensor size. To put it into perspective, a type 1 sensor paired with an F1.8 lens would perform significantly better than full-frame sensor with an F16 lens covering the same field of view, simply because the physical diameter of the former is simply larger.

A type 1/1.3 sensor has a crop factor of roughly 3.4, so Magic 6 Pro's main lens has a full-frame equivalent of F4.76. This isn't the most ideal for capturing motion but as long as the lighting is good (like in those sample photos), you should be able to get decent results out of it.

The telephoto sensor is quite big, could it be the biggest among Android smartphones to this date?

iPhone cameras are pretty decent now but I would certainly put Vivo, Oppo and OnePlus ahead of Samsung at the moment. Oh, and I would NEVER use Galaxy if I had to capture moving subjects with a phone.

Also, notice how the fencers are very well-lit in those samples - most likely the camera was able to choose an extremely fast shutter speed to freeze their motion.

If dicussion of Samsung's cameras are anything to go by, people take this sort of thing seriously so I think this is a perfect way to advertise its ability to shoot fast moving subjects with little to no blur

Looks like there will be two winners for a best camera phone of the year. Honor Magic 6 Pro RS and Xiaomi Mi 14 Ultra but lets see.

The camera is at the level of OnePlus/Xiaomi. But loses to Vivo, Samsung Ultra and iPhone.
However the rest far behind - their phones are bit unsupported or rather the quality of customer service, promotions and their software are not as good on the US and EU markets as it is in China.

Dynamic photos, especially sports photos: car racing, motor sports, football. Here, phones, including Honor, probably have no chance with DSLR.

Those old sony phones from Z, M ,E and C series had those scene recognition modes available on manual. One of them was for sports.
Exactly same thing, much faster shutter.

David 040882, 07 Feb 2024They just want to show what it can do and create some hype ... moreI think parents of young kids often try to get photos of their kids doing activities. At least where I am basically all the parents of kids around the same age as mine take more photos of their kids than anything else. Many of these would be when the kids are doing activities. Outside in good sunlight any phone should be able to do a good job as the shutter speed should be fast enough. However, indoors or on a dreary day outside many phones will fail to take good pics when there is movement if they don't have this type of built in sports mode. For example, in the past I've found it very hard to get clear pics of my kid baby swimming, playing in indoor play areas, playing basketball or football indoors and participating in fencing competitions. Even just trying to get clear pics of kids or babies with any movement indoors can be very difficult as phones may often shoot with a shutter speed of 1/100, 1/50 or 1/30 all of which won't be fast enough to capture movement clearly. Therefore, having phones with this type of camera feature for people with young kids is really useful and practical.

Indeed we always face situations like this!
The dog running, the kids playing, something fast happening in the street and most smartphone fail miserably choosing the shutter speed and we only get blurred images.
I always get furious when I try to capture some action whith the telephoto and my phone decides to go 1/30 sec!!!! If I go to pro mode, select the correct speed with the touchscreen, then the subject has gone. Smartphones need a great auto mode. The pro mode is for when you have the time to anticipate the scene.

David 040882, 07 Feb 2024They just want to show what it can do and create some hype ... moreSort of. I go dancing a lot and sometimes try to get photos of my friends. Generally lower light levels and people moving. The phones now are almost back to what my Lumia 1020 could achieve. Yes, really! It had a proper flash and a shutter. But my Magic 5 Pro is 'comparable' even with no flash. And no, I'm not going to take a big camera, the photos are just for my memories and I am there for fun not as an official photographer.

So much so that I think it's likely a scam.

Fencing photography is done at 1/1000 to 1/4000 shutter speed. Indoors with a phone camera sensor and producing images with no noise? pure BS, nothing more.
