potato4k, 17 Feb 2024I hope Apple stick to Samsung. Nobody wants a 2nd tier low ... moreIt‘s probably only bargaining chips for haggling with Samsung. „Well, Samsung, if you won’t give us Displays for $20, we will go to BOE.“ If they only asked and wanted Samsung, they‘d say „Hey Samsung, we want displays for $20.“ and Samsung would be like „50 take it or leave it“

2025 makes sense, as the iPhone 16 would get action button first.

Where is LG display? I would expect LG to be aggressive in opportunities like this, especially since they stopped their own phones.

So it’s basically a iphone 14 with a just one camera with type c port.
            maybe no dynamic island

What? why is Samsung cheaper than BOE and Tiamna? are they afraid? maybe they know Chinese is better.

Anonymous, 16 Feb 2024People love to say it "failed" just because it di... moreI think the iPhone 12 Mini and the iPhone 13 Mini actually had much more sales than that.
I think it was closer to 30 Million units sold each. Which makes it more than all the flagship Android Phones sold.

The problem was that Apple was somewhat cannibalizing their own segment. If you were buying the Mini, they were getting a much smaller profit margin. Meanwhile, the iPhone SE market wasn't doing that, because these were customers they didn't have. It was people who wouldn't justify buying another iPhone, because their old one was fine, but suddenly going "well, it's only $400" and the phones were made for literal pennies for Apple. Another point is that it preserved the LCD and TouchID technologies, and whilst Apple loves to move forward with their ecosystem (eg Intel to ARM) they still make it a point to support their old systems. And I think this was their way of doing it.

The dumbest thing is that Apple, at least in recent times, keeps making mistakes BUT their profits and marketshare STILL seems to go up. So logic really has little influence here. There are bigger factors at play, like mindshare, advertising, and changing changing market conditions. The Notch was and is dumb, it makes no sense on a small tablet or even smaller devices, yet the MacBooks have TouchID and the iPhones have FaceID. Go figure.

potato4k, 17 Feb 2024I hope Apple stick to Samsung. Nobody wants a 2nd tier low ... moreBOE cheated Samsung the most.
They were far behind LG when it came to OLED technology, then like a miracle, within some months they were producing OLED screens that were similar to the previous generation Samsung units. Basically they caught upto LG and were on the heels of Samsung. Upon close examination, their technology seems not too similar to LG, but borrows heavily from Samsung. It's not so much the design or construction, but what they stole was "trade secrets" for the factory when it comes to using the chemical processes and actually turning the organic material into usable compounds. They've got a big part of the picture when it comes to mass production. They don't have all the facilities and techniques, which is why they still lag in terms of units produced and operating costs, and they don't have a Research Facility like Samsung to improve the technology further. But again, they went from having 1% marketshare to now +35% and not lagging behind too much in quality.

That is just too many coincidences to happen. As much as I love the added options and competition in the market as a consumer, this is dangerous, as the theft of technology eventually leads to the decay of innovation. So hopefully Samsung is more responsible to protecting their R&D interests, and BOE do better by adding to the field with their own innovations, that's the path to a better future. The same goes for the silicon wafer industry, where giants like GlobalFoundries have gone bankrupt, Intel being in very problematic circumstances, and the innovation coming from Samsung Foundry and TSMC. But we see some peculiarities with the likes of SMIC going from questionable 45nm nodes and jumping towards 8nm, again in record time. Or the famous destruction of Nortel the world leader in telecommunications, and the surprising jump of Huawei Towers going from 2G technology to 4G networks, globally in a very small timeframe. We need these companies to co-operate AND innovate, we want to preserve the system, that tomorrow will be hospitable for new technologies because people are in fact rewarded for R&D. When that system fails, the markets will fail shortly after, and the consumers will be left scratching their heads.

Anonymous, 17 Feb 2024Or compare 60hz screen on $800 iphone and 120hz screen on $... moreOh that 120hz screen with the green lines? I’ll take the better quality 60hz screen that has no green lines in it. Also not everyone games on their phones and most games on Android don’t even run at 120fps so that argument is useless.

Hell a $300 ANDROID HANDHELD doesn’t have a 120hz screen or camera but it has everything else that a Samsung phone does that’s cheaper and better.

Does it magically get transported, stored and assembled as part of a phone? How does it get out of the country to the final market? What about taxes/tarrifs to enter the market? What happens when it enters the country? It magically get teleported to the final destination?

I get that Apple has a large margin, but you kids need to learn about the real world. Geez.

Look at the failure rate of the OnePlus Open. It's ridiculous. The fact that BOE even tried to cheat Apple in the past should've been a red flag.
