I have no idea if there was durability concerns with the aperture blades, but that might've also been a point of contention for them.

gsmguru, 21 Feb 2024S24u takes better zoom photos comapared to s23uNot at 230mm.

            My subjective opinion.
I used Xiaomi 12s Ultra, then a Pixel 7 Pro and 8 Pro, now a Samsung Galaxy s24 Ultra.
Xiaomi photography and native editing is slightly better than pixel and far better than Samsung.
So this collaboration should keep big dogs on their toes.

Also, periscope would be more expensive than current.

I must point out that many phones out there have great lenses and quite decent sensors, it's just that they're unknown due to reviewers reviewing only JPEG images coming from some stock camera app. An example would be Ulefone Armor 18T Ultra which gives out absolutely terrible JPEGs, among the worst, but it also gives outstanding RAW files with the lens that has some magical cinematic looks to it, and the sensor to match that lens. If only everybody started to review the actual optical performance vs the nonsense that that is out-of-device JPEGs.

Lol focal length in photography & videography based on genre. More zoom does not translate better. Mine stops at 90mm (around x3 zoom). More than that, not my genre. And since Leica known highly as a street shooter gear, it make sense they wont go further.

this institute will only develop products for xiaomi phones. co-branding was also doing the same thing. this looks like a step for longer relationship than huawei. besides, 13ultra had a terrible selfie camera and 14ultra seems to have no upgrades at all.

Wasn't adjustable apertures a thing for Samsungs and then quietly dropped? Wasn't that meant to be the next thing or did software computation basically render it not required?

Anton el .PAPI, 21 Feb 2024Why didn't they start by putting a 10x zoom? Since Sam... moreHonestly, I don't know why people want 10x in the smartphone. I have S23U and would rather have 0.6x, 1x, 2.5x and 5x than we is on that smartphone. And I assume that this is the case for most people. You do most pictures of your pet/friends/family/some views. Of course, having all possible zoom levels from 0.5 to 10000000 would be nice, but I think shorter ones are more usable to the average person. At least that is what I or most of my friends think.

Funnily enough, with the way in which Xiaomi software is terrible in many edge cases, Leica won't actually end up learning anything about computational photography from them. If anything, it will probably be the other way around.

Why didn't they start by putting a 10x zoom? Since Samsung abandoned it in the s24u?
