There's a telephoto camera, 1440p display, this years chip, rivaling D9300 and A17 Pro and much more. It also gets more promotion because it's cheaper (499 vs 799) while being a premium package, in the US market of course.

The 12R literally has a uninspiring 50MP + 8MP + 2MP setup, while the 12 has a proper flagship camera setup.
