Samsung unveils higher capacity HBM3E memory for faster AI training and inference

27 February 2024
The new modules pack 50% more capacity, 36GB per module. Samsung also says they have improved thermals too.

Anonymous, 28 Feb 2024That and the vega 56/64, used hbm2 memory i think. Im sure ... moreThey were not popular because comparing to Nvidia cards they lacked performance. Not memory fault, more of the AMD GPU chipsets itself, that's why HMB never caught up, could be also pricing issues too. GDDR simply is more cheaper and for GPU production prices rapidly increasing, made no sense anymore for AMd to put HMB to consumer gpu's to lose more gross margins.

Peter-B, 27 Feb 2024It's mostly pricing, I imagine. The only example that ... moreThat and the vega 56/64, used hbm2 memory i think. Im sure they ended up having heat issues i thought with the modules (im trying to remember when my mate got the vega 64, cost £350 at the time in like 2018).

Do you believe phones could ever use 3d stacked memory or just more business type orientation for products? (i dont recall any current consumer devices using hbm type memory with super wide bus but i could be wrong).

HyperionBurn, 27 Feb 2024why couldnt this ram be used in a gaming gpu?Because Nvidia and AMD are busy selling cards in bulk to data centres. That's the real reason GPU prices have been insanely inflated for half a decade while nothing happens on gaming performance. None of them are interested in trying to get the prices down to sensible levels because they wouldn't make any more money with a few more consumer customers.

HyperionBurn, 27 Feb 2024why couldnt this ram be used in a gaming gpu? It's mostly pricing, I imagine. The only example that I can think of is the AMD Radeon VII (2019) - it had 16GB HBM2 with 4,096-bit bus. It was $700 at launch, so it was sort of a consumer GPU. I don't think it was very popular, though.

The Intel Xeon Max series has HBM, but that's not exactly a consumer CPU.

HyperionBurn, 27 Feb 2024why couldnt this ram be used in a gaming gpu?Because AI is the hot new trend, whether we like it or not. CEOS and chairpersons of conglomerates/companies must be the most community-insensitive people, just because you like AI doesn't mean we do. People who actually understand how bad generative AI is, they're pushing for bills, laws and stuff made about it

Remember how the internet is this revolution that will make everyone in the world have ultra access to knowledge?

People just mostly use the internet for memes and tik tok

A.I. will have the same fate, people will always prefer to be pacified /entertained over everything else

Anton el .PAPI, 27 Feb 2024AI everywhere and I don't see anyone taking advantage ... moreWell, implementing AI for better battery durability might require additional processing power and could potentially consume more energy, offsetting any gains in battery life, so there's that.

AI everywhere and I don't see anyone taking advantage of it other than to make filters for photos hahahahaha how stupid! When will the batteries last 1 week on a single charge?
