US passes bill that could ban TikTok unless ByteDance sells it

13 March 2024
The bill has to also pass the Senate before being signed into law. If it does, ByteDance will have six months to find a new owner.

Anders, 13 Mar 2024Not saying I agree or disagree with this, but just want to ... moreWestern social media should be banned in every part of the world,
    including Europe!

American exceptionalism at its finest: if you can't compete with them, destroy them/make them sell it... For how long will the rest of the world allow these anti-competitive measures from the US?

Not saying I agree or disagree with this, but just want to point out all Western social media is banned in China.

I agree that banning it is good... but, this should be the time where the US stands up for consumer privacy and data in general. We all know that isn't going to happen, because they don't give a damn about the common people. There is too much money to be made off of other people's data, they just don't want China having it. It is a good thing, but exposes a bigger issue that is left untouched. The government does not truly represent the people unfortunately

I, as lot of other folks here, dislike TikTok with a passion, so good if they ban it.

And while they are at it, maybe ban IG or FB. Even Snapchat would be a great cleanup

The level of ignorance to think it's not a good thing to ban it... 65ppl in senate are that I guess.

Let's lobby the EU to pass a bill that will ban Apple, unless it's sold to Nokia or Philips.

Google and Facebook knowing more about every single person on Earth (including the US) than the KGB did? Who cares!
Apple freaking OWNING our smartphone market because of absurdly anti-competitive iMessage? Who cares!
Our "richest country on Earth" not bothering to give healthcare to its people? F yeah!
School shootings every other week? Heck yeah!
Our "democracy" being the only kind that let the dude the lost the election become president anyway, FOUR TIMES? F YEAH!

Let's ban TikTok! It's not like we have far worse problems at home that we actually cause!

So, basically US want that money.

Seriously how do you go from banning Tik Tok to MONOPOLY? rhetorical BTW"

The US wants ByteDance to sell TikTok, which is clearly a successful app, so they can capitalize on it's success. As if that wasn't clear, since they couldn't make a similar service that's more successful. If they just wanted to ban TikTok for some sort of a violation, they wouldn't ask ByteDance to sell it, would they?

(Apologies before hand as I cut and pasted this as DY hates accuracy)

The First Amendment (Amendment I) to the United States Constitution prevents the government from making laws that: regulate an establishment of religion; prohibit the free exercise of religion; abridge the freedom of speech, the freedom of the press, the freedom of assembly, or the right to petition the government for redress of grievances. It was adopted on December 15, 1791, as one of the ten amendments that constitute the Bill of Rights.

I do know that the former President, to the current wanted to ban Tik Tok also, but was told not to because The First Amendment (Amendment I) SCOTUS "advisory"
