Leaked iPhone 16 Pro case shows rumored Capture Button

It seems Apple is really adding a second custom button on the iPhone.

Purpose of this 2 stage shutter button is to allow people to take photos without camera shake mainly. If you compare the 2 mechanisms involved, you'd see that pressing the soft shutter button on the screen causes the phone to move forward, even though ever so slightly.
As for the volume buttons acting as a shutter button, they are NOT 2 stage buttons with soft-press-to-focus capability. I've used that an found it to be a very jarring experience. You cannot back out of shot let's say of the focus isn't perfect.

Finally, given how big and bezelless the screens today are, people have to cover a lot of screen real estate to touch that digital shutter button, while keeping the phone still and this is very difficult amd introduces camera shake. Therefore this physical shutter button is a god send for adults with smaller hands!
Even for movable digital shutter buttons, they often obstruct the viewfinder when moved to a convenient location (let's say top right or top left ).

Finally, I can only assume that you haven't used any of the very good phones that were there way before the iPhone was released.

Sony Ericsson K750i, K800i , Nokia N73, N82,N95,N8 etc were all excellent camera phones that had excellent 2 stage physical shutter buttons that allowed to take photos without blurr even back in those days where top dog mobile CPUs were just single core 300-400mhz units with no gpu acceleration! Amd there was no AI gimmicky as well!

And finally, this physical shutter button is one of the few additions that actually make sense for the real world mobile camera usage of people unlike those gimmicky digital assistant buttons and what not so props to Apple for finally adding something useful instead of removing features (like the headphone jack).

What I don't understand is, why do people like you advocate for removal of features and having limited choice for everyone just because of your limited outlook??? No one is forcing you to use the physical shutter, you can use your digital shutter or the volume keys if you want any time.
This is one of the few features that would want me to leave android and pick up an iPhone straightway once the new series gets released because it's that important to a heave camera user like me!

          What's the point of this button? You can already use the volume button as a shutter button. I thought Apple cares about design and aesthetics. Adding a button like that is ugly. If you need a capture button, that means there's something wrong with your UI. The idea of having a touch screen is so to have a completely customized UI. If you still need an extra button, you're doing something wrong.

          Geez, Apple should rewatch the original iPhone keynote.

                              Anonymous, 26 Mar 2024It is not power nor finger scanner. Just for camera What do you need the button cut out for camera ? The 2 level half in and all the way works with covered case button also. Or whats different for Apple button that for decades work for Nokia and Lumia phones like from my experience with 520 and 830 that had the camera button.

                                That button make no sense the iPhone already has the quick camera on the action button. Are they gonna start making buttons for everything? What’s next another button for the flashlight, notes, audio recording? Unbelievable 🙄
